Will Google TV Or YouView Launch In UK First?

If your in the UK you may have yet to catch on to the tv on the web craze. But there are a queue of companies led by Google TV and Youview trying to launch hardware first, thereby getting the dominant position in the UK market.

For UK viewers who are not in the online tv loop, soon your tv will be invaded by all types of web content, from streaming shows to built-in web app. The internet will be fed into your tv screen by games consoles, set-top boxes, blu-ray players or even the tv itself. And the big battle looks set to be between Google TV and Youview.

But if they are both coming, whats the rush? Well it could well be the case that whichever company makes it into the market first, will become the dominating force.  Although i remember a similar argument years ago when Betamax came out before VHS in the video player wars.

With Google TV, you get a web browser built into your television set, you can by typing in an actors name bring up a selection of other video’s and streams featuring said actor, biography, inside leg measurment you name it, and you can get all this information from the world wide web showing as a window (or full screen) on the tv set.

The platform from Google also lets viewers create playlists that can be a combination of content, from Youtube videos, catch up tv, tv on demand. Of course that is just the theory which has fallen into problems with the US launch. There Google have found themselves blocked by the networks from showing tv streams.

When it was launched in the US, Google TV was not that well received. Reviewers of the platform described it as complicated to use and prone to technical problems. However, with Google’s Android operating system running the backend, expect to see frequent updates to improve the experience.

At this time, there is no confirmed UK launch date for Google TV, however you can be sure they will be hoping to beat YouView into the UK shops. The YouView IPTV project has been formed by a group of companies including the BBC, Channel 4, Channel 5 ITV, BT, TalkTalk and Arqiva.

The concept is imilar to the Google TV platform, except it will be more app driven rather than an open web browser. YouView is currently scheduled for release by mid 2011.

Always happy to link to sources of internet tv information. We have many writers on Worldtvpc and they get inspiration from different sources just like all writers do. We always encourage a link to the original source if quoting from an article already out there. However we never approve of copying anything as it would be totally pointless.
