Google TV is making cable networks nervous

You may have heard all the fuss surrounding the launch of Google TV and wondered what all the fuss is about. The fact is that because Google (who are currently the most recognised brand in the world) are entering the tv market, they will have cable providers worried, although previous online tv pretenders have been squashed. Google are a threat that will not just go away and could revolutionise the way you consume media.

The difference with Google’s android platform is that it is open source, which will encourage partners to jump aboard and start developing. Already Google havent done too badly with both Sony and Logitech involved at the launch. Logitech’s Google TV box communicates with your cable or satellite provider’s box to pull in its information and display it using the Android interface. Sony will install the software in all new web enabled tv sets.

So where is the threat to cable? Well for a start, viewers who purchase a Google Smart TV box for a single one off payment or a new TV with Google TV built in, no longer need to pay an extra monthly fee but still have a mass of choices on offer.

New Google TV buyers may ditch cable because their viewing needs could be met with internet video and tv available through the Google TV platform. Already many disgruntled cable viewers are thinking about cutting back their pay TV subscriptions, which could have cable companies wetting their expensive subscription paid for pants.

Of course cable companies argue that as soon as a subscriber leaves, another joins up. But Google TV could be a much bigger test of cable subscribers convictions. Already Comcast chief has admitted worrying about the online tv threat.

Whatever the impact Google have on your tv set, you can bet that watching tv in five years will be a whole different experience to the one your having now.
