Google TV Getting Ready For UK Launch?
After the diificult times Google TV has experienced sinch launch, it comes as somewhat a surprise that the official launch of Google TV in the UK will be announced today.
The Google TV platform runs on the AndroidOS and Chrome web browser and comes in the form of a set-top box or connected TV that has Smart TV functions, such as browsing the web and watching online video alongside standard tv broadcasting and catch-up TV services. Android smartphones can also be used as remote controls for Google TV.
According to the Telegraph newspaper, a UK release will be revealed by Eric Schmidt, Googles executive chairman and former CEO at the Edingburgh Television Festival to be held today.
The service was launched in the US in October of last year and has been beset by problems including dissapointing sales and TV streaming being blocked by US networks, including ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox. An expected international launch was delayed late last year,
After all the problems in the US, Schmidt will be on a charm offensive with UK networks. The Press Association say that he will say that the television industry and Google can benefit from closer collaboration.
They probably have a better chance of the deal working in the UK as two of the commercial networks, Channel 5 and Channel 4 let Google owned Youtube stream their catch-up content. It is ealso expected that Google will have deals in place with UK networks and will include the two biggest networks, BBC Iplayer and ITV Player.
The service from Google is expected to launch in the UK within the next six months.
