Google Prepare Cheap Tablet To Rival Kindle Fire

Having seen the success of Amazon’s entry into the tablet computer market, Google are reportedly planning to create a low-cost product of their own in a bid to stake a greater presence in the market.

Internal sources at Google are claiming that they are in the process of creating a 7-inch tablet computer that will be sold under their own name, as opposed to tablet and smartphone subsidiary Android.

It is also thought that this Google-brand tablet will look to establish itself as a cheap product to contend with the current successful presence of Amazon’s Kindle Fire, targeting a proposed launch price of $199 (£128) to create direct competition with the product developed by the popular online retailer.

As a further means of forming a direct rival to the Kindle Fire, Google seem likely to be planning their product with a range of integrated (and profitable) content under their own brand, meaning potential direct links to services such as Google+, YouTube, Google Maps, and Google Music, in a similar way to the Kindle Fire having home-page redirects to the Amazon website and Amazon Prime.

The potential new product confirms rumours started by Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt last week, and while he claimed that a tablet ‘of the highest quality’ was being planned, he may have been referring to an Android-brand tablet, with all signs pointing to the Google-named option entering the cheaper end of the market.

Other current information on the product is that it will run on Android’s ‘Ice Cream Sandwich’ 4.0 operating system, and that it will be released in March or April. Will this challenger from a technically new name put a dent in Amazon’s good run of sales?
