Google Plan Tasty Android Update

After Apple recently revealed details of a new update to their products, Google Android naturally responded in kind, with Google’s executive chairman Eric Schmidt confirming rumours that they are to unveil a new cross-product mobile operating system, with the release confirmed for Q4 2011, with a narrowed-down estimate of October or November this year.

Regardless of the quality of this update, Android fans with a sweet tooth will flock to find out more about a project with a codename of ‘Ice Cream Sandwich’. At the recent Salesforce ‘cloud computing conference’, Schmidt was in attendance to reveal the release date. He announced: “We have a new operating system, internally known as Ice Cream Sandwich, for some reason, which is being released in October, November, which everyone is really excited about.”

The unusual choice of internal codename is thought to stem from the apparent fusion between Android ‘Gingerbread’ smartphone software, and the ‘Honeycomb’ tablet operating system.

It is believed that this new ‘universal operating system’ will be able to simplify the process of external developers creating applications intended to be hosted on multiple devices (including Android’s smartphones and tablet computers), as a way of decreasing overall development costs. On the consumer side of the updates, key attractions to the new system will mainly include camera features, with ‘face-tracking’ and voice recognition-based ‘focus switching’, amongst the intelligent new features in development.

With recent smartphone studies revealing that Android could overtake Apple’s iPhone in terms of smartphone ‘app’ downloads by the end of the year (with Android set to host an estimated 2 billion more apps this year compared to their rivals), the Google comapny’s current situation seems to be a good one, but will their latest big-name (and strange-name) development go down a treat, or will it melt shortly after its release?
