German MTV Becomes A Pay Channel

The German Version Of music tv channel MTV have revealed that at the beginning of next year, MTV Deutschland is going to become a pay for basic channel.

Viva, which is also owned by the company, is going to remain a free to air music channel and is going to become the “main music and entertainment channel”.

MTV which has been a free channel since launch, is at the moment negotiating with the various cable, IPTV and satellite platforms to place the channel. MTV is going to become a pay channel at the start of January 2011. Additionally, MTV will also launch MTV Brand New as a “music clips” only channel.

Viva will be setup as a showcase channel for the other brands of the company as is already the case in the UK where it has taken the place of TMF on Freeview.

MTV Networks already operates the channels TVNHD, MTV Dance, MTV Rocks, MTV Music, VH1, VH1 Classic, Nick Jr. and Nicktoons as pay TV channels in the German market.

The last three years, the turnover of these channels has grown threefold. The combined Nickelodeon and Comedy Central channel will stay free to air for the time being.

This move that MTV has taken marks the first time a German free to air broadcaster has moved into the encrypted TV area.

It is currently not known if other MTV stations around the world will follow suit.
