George Lucas Makes His Final Scene

Yesterday saw a swift and care-free announcement in the world of Hollywood, as famed film-maker George Lucas announced that he was retiring from the industry.

65-year-old Lucas, who is most notable for his key roles in producing the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises (for which he would later be the source of controversy as he made numerous ‘re-releases’ and ‘unnessecary’ sequels and prequels to the films), revealed the news in a recent interview with the New York Times. This would mean that his most recent production (Red Tails, which is theatrically released tomorrow), could well be his last.

It is believed that while he is ‘still open’ to the possibility of making a fifth Indiana Jones movie, as well as remastering old versions of Star Wars films, the well-known director is otherwise quitting showbusiness, with the main reason (aside from age) being that he feels fans of the Star Wars franchise are unappreciative towards the ‘tweaks’ that he reguarly makes to the film’s back catalogue.

He said of his decision, and the key reason for deciding to quit: “I’m retiring. I’m moving away from the business [film-making], from the company [Lucasfilm], from all this kind of stuff. Why would I make any more [Star Wars], when everybody yells at you all the time and says what a terrible person you are?”

He went out with a dig at some of the ‘hard-core’ Star Wars fans that often complain about his changes to the films of the franchise: “On the internet, all those same guys that are complaining I made a change are completely changing the movie. I’m saying: ‘Fine. But my movie, with my name on it, that says I did it, needs to be the way I want it.’”

George Lucas’ production partner at Lucasfilm Rick McCallum confirmed the news, stating: “Red Tails will be the last blockbuster Lucas makes. Once this is finished, he’s done everything he’s ever wanted to do. He will have completed his task as a man and a film-maker.”

While he may effectively leave the industry on a potentially controversial note, will George Lucas’ 47-year legacy be fondly remembered by his fellow film-makers, or is he still not quite finished with his career yet?
