Fox’s long-running hit Bones are looking to set themselves up for a potential spinoff series, with the planned casting of a brand new recurring character that would grow into a role that is capable of starring in a show of their own. Casting for this role seems ready to begin in the coming months.

If the producers of the comedy-drama, alongside the Fox Network, can find an actor with the potential to carry an independent new series, the role of new character ’Walter Sherman’ will first appear in a new episode of Bones on December 6th.

The character of ‘Walter’, who will also be known as ‘the Locator’, is profiled as an eccentric, loud and amusing, yet skeptical man aged around 30, with the ability to find anything, making him a sought-after companion of the main characters during their missions. The character will begin his run by already having ties to Agent Booth (David Boreanaz) from a previous job with the pair expressing a strong dislike for each other, while Dr Brennan (Emily Deschanel) seems to find Walter ‘very intriguing’. The basic profile of Walter is completed with the tale that he was injured whilst overseas, which caused brain damage, the reason behind his ever-present paranoia.

‘Planted spinoffs’ look to be the current method of choice for networks, who look to utilise established series as a way of spawning new shows, under the premise that the audience should already be aware of the main character(s) due to their time on the main show. This method has had mixed success in the past, and Fox will hope that their hit series Bones (based on an FBI agent (Boreanaz), and a forensic anthropologist (Deschanel), who team up in order to investigate death causes), will have a positive effect on the networks’ line-up, and with the main series reaching the 100-episode mark in the spring, see the planned spin-off to similar levels of success to its parent show.
