Flingo Technology Means Your TV watching Gets Tracked

Technology has been released that makes your TV smart, especially when it comes to watching what your doing in front of your TV. The software that will be built into future connected tv sets and will be able to track what your watching with what apps and websites your running too.

Your TV could be getting too smart.

The service from San Francisco based Flingo, is called Sync Apps and can monitor the internet-connected TV collecting data on what is being shown on TV. This data can then be used to show relevant ads and information that the user may find of interest.

The technology can be used for other uses as well. Speaking about the technology, David Harrison, co-founder of Flingo said, “Any mobile app or Web page being used in front of your TV can ask our servers what is on right now.”

He continued, “For example, you could go to Google or IMDB and the page would already know what’s on the screen. Retailers like Amazon or Walmart might want to show you things to buy related to a show, like DVDs, or what people are wearing in it.”

So users can be redirected to a particular section of a website depending on what they are watching. All well and good for advertisers, but why would any sane person want that kind of set-up running on their TV?

A public API has been made available for developers, and the resulting applications will decide if the technology becomes a success.  The issue of privacy issues has been addressed by having the option for users to opt-in to the service or switch it off.

Unless there are real user benefits, i can only see viewers heading for the off switch if Sync Apps hits their TV.
