Flash Player Dropped By Lovefilm In Favor Of Silverlight

In a further blow to the Flash player, Lovefilm the Amazon owned and UK based streaming on-demand service have revealed they will replace the current flash player with Microsoft’s Silverlight platform instead.

Lovefilm go with Silverlight player

The move could be as a result of adobe killing off the flash player for mobile platforms, but Lovefilm are citing additional security issues demanded by movie studios as well. Speaking about the change, lovefilms streaming project manager, Paul Thompson said, “Simply put: without meeting their requirements, we’d suddenly have next-to-no films to stream online.”

He continued saying that the studios are, “insisting, understandably, that we use robust security to protect their films from piracy, and they see the Silverlight software as more secure than Flash.”

He said that the options were between Silverlight and HTML, but that Silverlight has the Smooth Streaming features that will also improve the streams as the player automatically adjusts video quality to the optimum level for your web connection. The player change will be seen from January on connected TV, consoles, compuets, iPad and Mac computers.

The competition for streaming content is ratcheting up in the UK as Netflix are poised to arrive in UK soon. And any streaming service had better toe the Hollywood line or it’s bye-bye content.

  1. Hi Steve –
To me better streaming is good for everyone and if they get rid of Flash for mobile and replace it with Silverlight the results will be a great improvement. Flash (Adobe) should upgrade their streaming process in order to produce a better picture and it looks like they need better security for copyright material as well.
Flash is OK but hardly clear(to me) . I always look for other streams before using any Flash feed.
I hope Lovefilm.com can make the changes needed to satisfy the big movie studios or it looks like they will be without content.
I try to forgo all these services for free streaming of movies and TV in general. I put together a toolbar to let you stream whatever you want for free. If you want, go to my site and check it out you might like it.
