X Factor Wagner Getting Online Aid?
Wacky X Factor contestant Wagner has divided opinion in the UK as to whether he should stay on the show or not, but the Brazilian expat could need to be thankful to the Internet for his continued presence on this year’s version of the hit show, after large fan followings have been revealed, on social networking site Facebook, but most notably from long established American reality show trouble-maker ’Votefortheworst.com’.
This could be a key factor in the wildcard act’s success, as his singing voice has been questioned by many. Although Wagner has survived this far, the website have claimed that their work is far from done, and that they will support Wagner to go as far into the competition as possible, possibly even winning it?
Votefortheworst.com has now been running for 7 years ago as a satire-based website that encourages ‘block voting’ for ‘the worst’ contestant in a reality TV show. It started purely with American Idol, but has developed into forming interest in other US shows, and in the last few years has expanded their interests overseas somewhat, first via Canadian Idol, and starting last year, the X Factor, throwing their support behind tone-deaf Irish twins John & Edward.
It has constantly stated that its goal is to ‘throw a spanner in the works’ of the ‘miserably boring and predictable’ TV talent shows. The site has currently got a worldwide userbase of several hundred thousand, with over 35,000 of them registered members.
It is well-known that viewers outside the UK cannot vote on the show due to international restrictions, but in addition to persuading the 10% of British users of the site to vote Wagner, votefortheworst are in the process of searching for a system which will allow the voting restrictions to be lifted for them, potentially giving the Brazilian an even greater boost for his seemingly slim chances. A similar system has previously worked for the website against US / Canada restrictions on voting.
An administrator for the website commented: “The UK is more VFTW than America and that there was a home there for us. We were so surprised and pleased to see that 10% of the people who visited our website this weekend are from the UK, while 15% of our total visitors were from Europe, impressive considering American Idol isn’t even on right now. We would never imagine seeing numbers like this. As our campaign is just getting rolling, I’m excited to see what the numbers are next weekend”.
He also added: “When I asked STP if the site was looking for a work-around to allow the vast American and worldwide Wagner fanbase to play their part in the X Factor sabotage, he told me ‘This is our next step’. We’ve mastered ways for Canadians to vote on American Idol and have been doing so for two seasons. With Internet phone programs now, anything is possible and we’re determined to find solutions.”
The site is looking forward to potentially eliminating some of the favourites in weeks to come, now that the bulk of the ‘weaker contestants’ are gone.
There have previously been several success stories for VFTW, with many unfancied acts going further than expected. Could the popular Wagner prove to be their latest achievement? The man himself will certainly hope so, as he prepares for week 5 of the live show contest, with the theme of the week being ‘American anthems’. Will he be the latest beneficiary of an Internet backlash against mainstream reality shows?
