X Factor Creates Singing Judges Twist
Producers of ITV’s The X Factor have decided to challenge the show’s judges to put their microphones where their mouths are in this weekend’s final, as they become a replacement for the traditional ‘celebrity duet’ segment of the annual event.
Remaining acts Amelia Lily, girl group Little Mix, and Marcus Collins are due to sing alongside their respective mentors (Kelly Rowland, Tulisa Contostavlos and Gary Barlow) in front of 10,000 fans at Wembley Arena (in London (England)) respectively.
Fourth judge Louis Walsh, as a professional band manager and the only non-singer on the panel, will probably be glad that he is not going up on stage, with the move reportedly made because all of his acts are already eliminated, as well as claims suggesting that the big-name performers that they were lining up for the duets refused to participate.
A show source said of the twist: “Once Louis Walsh’s acts were eliminated it became clear the three judges with acts left were all current singers. It’s going to be more pressured than ever. The acts will be singing in front of 10,000 people – and with their mentors. The judges will be nervous as well because the song could be the difference between winning and losing. And on top of that, Simon Cowell will be watching from LA. So the judges are almost auditioning for their places on next year’s show as well.”
The two-day final, which will be broadcast for a cumulative 4 hours, will reveal who the series 8 winner is, as well as featuring celebrity performances from Coldplay, Michael Buble, Westlife, former X Factor winner Leona Lewis, and former contestants JLS and One Direction. Dubbed as the ’British TV Superbowl’ for having the highest commercial prices of the year, advertisers can expect to pay in excess of £200,000 ($314,000) for a 30-second slot, thought to be able to bring in a potential £20m to host broadcaster ITV.
While the upcoming final of the American counterpart will most likely raise even more money through commercial breaks, it is unlikely to follow the same ‘twist’ of judges singing. Simon Cowell would probably not want to risk it…
