Echostars Set Top Box Gives Remote TV On Phones And Tablets
You can now watch as well as manage recorded TV and live TV from any computer and some smartphones and tablets with the Slingloaded technology. The Echostar HDS-600RS Freesat+ HD set top box combines Freesat+ and the Sling Media tv anywhere on demand.
The Slingloaded technology which is also known as placeshifting, allows an Internet enabled device to remotely connect through the internet to the user’s set top box back at their home. Video is then streamed from the set top box to the device.
For UK viewers of the free satellite TV service, they can now view both live and recorded TV remotely pretty much anywhere for no extra monthly costs.
The EchoStar SlingLoaded device comes equipped with 500 GBytes of HD storage (300 hours SD or 100 hours HD). It also has a HD EPG (electronic program guide) including pausing live tv and rewind plus watch one show whilst recording another just like Sky. The set top box comes with the usual scart ports it also has S/PDIF, RCA, RF, Ethernet, HDMI and USB 2.0 ports.
Emma Scott, Managing Director of Freesat said:- “This is a great partnership for us. It’s our first foray into EchoStar’s ‘TV anywhere’…Freesat has constantly evolved since launch and this paves the way for more exciting innovations in the future.”
The HDS-600RS is going go on sale on 1 April from John Lewis and Amazon.co.uk. You can pre order the box at Amazon for £349.99, with a stock date of 28 March.
For the placeshifting to work a Sling application for devices running IOS or Android is required and available for £19.99 to enable you to stream your live or recorded TV from the set top box.
The mobile service works over 3G and WiFi so you can stream or control the set top box from anywhere. Another thing of note about the app is that it can only stream in standard definition.
