Dreamworks Movies Coming To Netflix As Deal Is Confirmed
Netflix have confirmed a streaming deal with DreamWorks Animation bringing top animated movies such as Shrek, Antz, Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda, as well as first run movies to the under fire online movie service.
The multi-year deal will give exclusive rights to Netflix for first-run films as well as TV specials. First run movies are said to begin with the 2013 lineup, however older movies will be coming to Netflix too.
Speaking about the deal, CEO of DreamWorks Animation, Jeffrey Katzenberg, said, “Netflix has emerged as an innovative brand with an impressive track record for attracting high-quality content providers to its service and we look forward to making DreamWorks Animation titles available to over 24 million Netflix members in the U.S. This arrangement allows us to get more value for our content while giving us a greater degree of flexibility in how we distribute it across multiple platforms in today’s evolving digital world.”
Speaking on behalf of Netflix, Ted Sarandos, chief content officer, said that DreamWorks is “one of the few family entertainment brands that really matters.”
The companies were known to be in talks back in July, and the deal comes soon after Starz announced they will remove content from Netflix in February, leaving a big hole in Netflix’s already lacking reserves of quality content.
Although more details are sketchy, the New York Times, have reported the deal could be costing Netflix around $30 million.
