Dish Launch Netflix Rival Blockbuster Movie Pass

Watch out Netflix, Dish Network are after your customers after launching a new streaming and DVD rental rival, Blockbuster Movie Pass. The subscription service will consist of streaming content, rental DVD and video games just like Netflix.

The service sounds good when delving a little deeper as well. A library of more than 4,000 movies to stream (via dishonline.com), 100,000 TV shows, movies and games sent by mail and a further 3,000 for viewing on your television from premium movie channels like Starz Cinema, IndiePlex and MoviePlex.

Speaking about the move, Dish chief executive Joe Clayton said, “One company, one bill, one connection for everything you need in video entertainment.”

The cost will be an attractive $9.99 monthly, beating Netflix who charge $8 monthly for streaming and a further $8 for DVD rental. Is there a downside? Well of course there is. You will need to be an existing customer, or sign up to be a customer of Dish before you can get access to the new service when it launches on October 1.

Dish, who have around 14 million customers for their satellite TV service have said that they will offer the service to everyone later in the year, so the impact may not be so great on Netflix for now.

Dish acquired Blockbuster who were on the brink of shutting down back in April for $320 million, and then set about planning a streaming service to rival Netflix. And now is a great time to be attacking Netflix after they suddenly became most unpopular streaming service after putting up prices by 60%.

Netflix, though, holds an advantage with more than 20,000 TV shows and movies available for streaming. Movie Pass will offer more than 3,000 movies streamed to the TV and 4,000 movies streamed to the computer.

Dish will offer the Movie Pass service free for the first year to new subscribers of a $40 or more monthly service and will require a two year commitment.

One Response to “Dish Launch Netflix Rival Blockbuster Movie Pass”

  1. I was pretty psyched when I heard about this, and now that I’ve been using the Blockbuster Movie Pass for a little over a month now, I feel it’s safe to say it’s considerably better than Netflix. Now I never used Netflix a ton, being that I’m a DISH Network subscriber and employee I get most of my entertainment through my dish, but I did find Netflix to provide a valuable supplementary service with its streaming and by mail movies. But now with Blockbuster, not only do I have streaming straight to my receiver and PC, and I have movies by mail, I also have the option to take those movies for an in-store exchange (a huge bonus in my book), and the disc rentals include games (another huge bonus), and if that’s not enough it includes 20 movie channels, all for $10 a month, which after Netflix’s price hike is considerably cheaper too! Easy decision there.
