Discovery Channel App For iPad Gets Social

As Facebook and Twitter becomes more and more an everyday activity for most people, the Discovery Channel is releasing a TV app for iPad that includes a button to let your contacts know what your up to.

The app which is free includes previews of shows such as Mythbusters, Gold Rush: Alaska and Deadliest Catch, and also chat options and an ‘I’m Watching’ feature that informs your Twitter and Facebook friends that your watching clips on a pretty lame app.

The app has more though, also included are the following features:-

Featured: See what’s on prime time tonight in your location. When you find something you want to watch, tap the alarm clock to set a tune-in reminder. Also, scroll through the featured shows and videos for a taste of what’s on TV.

Shows: Watch video, learn more about the show and cast, and browse through photos from production photography shoots. This is also where you initiate your Chat session with show hosts and fans, check the TV schedule for a particular show and buy full episodes through iTunes.

If your favorite show is on during prime time, tap on the I’m Watching button to check in and let you’re friends on Facebook and Twitter know what you’re watching, all while you get the latest social media updates from Discovery and joining the conversation with fellow fans.

So, not so much a TV viewing experience but more a compliment to the show your watching. Not sure it will make many people go out and buy an iPad 2, but it will be interesting to see if anyone bothers loading the app on iPad. However i could see how the feature could work better if it is running on a connected TV and on the same screen as the show.
