Dexter Tops Illegal Download Charts For 2011
The list of most pirated TV shows of 2011 is out and everyone’s favorite serial killer Dexter is on top with 3.62 million illegitimate downloads in 2011. This compares with just 2.19 million legitimate US views of the same show. Coming in second and third were Game of Thrones and The Big Bang Theory.
Pirates like serial killers
The news comes from Torrent Freak’s annual list of the most pirated television shows of the year. Interestingly though, although illegal downloading is still a big issue, the trend for pirating shows has been declining.
The lack of illegal growth can be attributed to online streaming services say TorrentFreak, “This is in part thanks to alternative viewing options such as Hulu and Netflix. In other regions, such as Australia and Europe, the demand for US TV-shows remains strong.”
Outside the US illegal dfownloading remains ever popular, in part thanks to the lousy delayed distribution of hit shows. “Outside the US fans sometimes have to wait endlessly before their favourite show airs on TV in their own country. Many of them are simply not that patient or willing to torture themselves, and turn to BitTorrent in desperation.”
So the cure for piracy is easy. Just make shows available worldwide at the same time and give them to viewers for a reasonable cost (or even better, free).
TorrentFreak concludes: “In common with many branches of the entertainment industry, the challenge for TV companies is to come up with a business model that allows users to consume what they want at any given time, without losing revenue in the process. When that puzzle is solved worldwide the number of unauthorised downloads will be pretty much insignificant.”

8. Terra Nova – 1,910,000 (9,220,000)
9. True Blood – 1,850,000 (5,530,000)
10. Breaking Bad -1,730,000 (2,580,000)
