Dell Considers Developing Internet TV Devices And Google TV Software

Dell said on Thursday that it is considering developing devices beyond PC’s that would stream Internet content to regular TV sets. The company is testing new devices from set top box makers and ODMs that could seamlessly bring Internet content to TV sets, said Chris Camilletti, desktop product manager at Dell.

Dell is also considering making use of Google TV software platform, which merges broadcast TV and the Internet into the one single interface.

Dell has not yet officially announced any product or device, and is still investigating the marketing opportunities, Camilletti said.

In targeting the television set, Dell is following companies like Apple, which makes the Apple TV, and Roku, which offers a digital video player that streams content from the Internet to TVs. A number of TV companies such as Samsung and Sony also have their eyes set on using the Internet to stream movies and TV shows.

But for the time being, Dell is using its computers to bridge that gap between the TV and the Internet. On Thursday Dell announced the Inspiron Zino HD desktop, saying it as an entertainment hub that can bring Internet movies to high definition TVs.

The device has VGA and HDMI ports, which allows a TV to become a monitor. Users can stream movies from the Internet to their high-definition TVs. The device is capable of storing up to 1TB of data, and an optional Blu-ray drive plays HD movies. Depending on the price, the Zino HD is powered either by Advanced Micro Devices’ Athlon II or quad-core Phenom II processors.

The Zino HD is the entry point to make consumers aware of the capability to play streaming movies on TV sets, Camilletti said. The device comes with a wireless keyboard and remote control to conveniently switch between the PC and TV.

The device can also be used for everyday computing and has the graphic ability for HD gaming. The Zino HD is priced starting at around US $299 and will be available worldwide later this year.

  1. As a side note to this article, there are also some great new mobile internet devices coming out in the market right now. For example, the Rover 4G puck allows you to connect to a 4G network whenever you and it is pay as go. Wouldn’t that be a great way to watch TV on your PC?
