Connected TV Sales Across Europe Booming

We all know that viewers want connected TV. Sales were booming in 2010 and are set to sell strongly in 2011 for the US, but it seems the story is similar around Europe as well. Reports from both Holland and Germany show that more than half all sets sold in 2011 will be connected.

Catch up a big attraction for connected tv in Europe

Broadband TV News have a report showing that in Holland around half the tv sets sold will come connected according to figures from GfK. They also claim that in 2012 around two-thirds of tv sets will be able to connect to the web.

This growth of connected TV sets will lead to 56% connected TV penetration in three years’ time in The Netherlands. These figures only reflect connected TV sets, not those connected to the web using a separate set-top box or games console.

With regards to the premium movie market, GfK predicts a shift from physical media (DVDs, Blu-ray discs) to web TV and cable VOD services. Although the firm expects premium movie sales and rentals to remain even, by 2013 the majority will be delivered via VOD and online rather than on physical media.

GfK’s figures for the Dutch market are along the same lines as those recently published for the German market, where Rapid News claim that every other TV sold in Germany will be connected according to to figures from German industry association BITKOM.

The figures show an impressive growth of 1000% from just 2 years go. And the Germans are actively seeking these sets rather than just buying sets that happen to be connected. 46% of Germans want web content on their TV.

So all good stuff for the internet tv market, but the figures are unclear as to whether buyers will make use of the connected capabilities of their new TV or that the set just comes equipped. Bit like the old surround sound features built into tv’s that were never really used.
