Comcast To Raise Cable Prices By Nearly 4%
Cable giant Comcast are heaping more misery on long suffering subscribers by raising its cable TV rates by almost 4% from August. Comcast announced the higher rates onĀ Friday and blamed new technology and business costs. Subscribers will now pay an average of $1.26-$1.95 extra each month for TV/Internet services.
So existing Comcast Internet customers paying on average $44.72 every month will be paying $46.67 in the summer. Customers currently subscribed to the Digital starter package of 80-plus channels which costs $61.99 each month will inrise to $63.25 monthly, and Lmited Basic customers will see monthly bills rise from $17.24 to $18.74.
Customers who signed up for promotional deals are not subject to the price rise, officials said, but pricing for additional services not covered by the promotion may change. The 3.8% increase comes soon after Comcast changed over from an analog to a digital service. Although the move freed up bandwidth for additional digital and HD content, it upset customers who rushed to Comcast offices and stood in lines for the digital conversion boxes. The boxes are required in order to continue receiving the Extended Basic service.
Shortly after the digital conversion, Comcast launched 81 new cable offerings including some existing networks like Animal Planet and Comedy Central that are now shown in high definition. Andrew Johnson, a Comcast regional vice president, cited the cost of digital conversion and investment in new high-definition technology as part of the reason for the rate increase. “We continue to invest in next-generation technology to support new product features, more programming choices and improvements to customer service,” Johnson said in a statement.
So Comcast give a little and take more in return. Will their price hikes spark a rash of cord cutting? Only time will tell, but rises such as this can be what push viewers over the edge.
