Comcast Bringing Live Cable TV To iPad

Comcast, the largest US cable are to beef up their iPad streaming app presence and compete with rival apps from Time Warner and Cablevision which let subscribers stream live cable TV to the Apple iPad.

The app which will not be a rebranded Xfinity TV app, but will run alongside it is said to be under construction. The story was broken by macrumors who  the service will let Comcast subscribers watch live cable TV from their iPad with the proviso that the iPad uses a Motorola wifi router supplied by Comcast. The service will not work using alternative Wi-Fi or wireless connections.

Comcast do have an existing iPad and Android Xfinity TV app available which allows users access to On-Demand content, browse TV listings and control the DVR and TV set.

AnyPlay will differ as content does not need to be recorded or watched catch-up style. But can instead be watched live with the cable broadcast. AnyPlay will also be able to show some programming included in a user’s current Xfinity service.

It is said that the Comcast AnyPlay service will allow viewers to register up to 10 tablets (who has 10 iPads??), but only a single device can watch live TV at one time. Launch date is not known, but expect Comcast to make it a limited availability at first.

  1. All the TV companies are moving forward with various apps to watch content on various devices. Time Warner, Cable Vision all have ways to watch TV on phones and tablets but they are limited to VOD or Live streaming on an in home network only. Direct is coming out with a way to take pre recorded shows with you. The only thing these services are all missing is live TV steaming anywhere you go. I have that with my TV provider/employer DISH Network. The DISH Remote Access app lets me stream all of my 250 channels, live to my phone where ever I have 3g, 3g or WIFI access. I can even watch my DVR recordings and set timers for new ones. Apps like the one from Comcast will only work on my home network. What good is that? I like to see the competition between companies but DISH has a clear lead with their services.
