CES Shows The Internet Will Become The Fourth Utility

Back in the old days (well just a few years actually) everyone accessed the internet via dial-up, few could have predicted that a few years later an internet connection would become the fourth utility after electric, gas and water.

Major advancments and new technology as shown at this years CES shows us that the next decade will completely change the way we interact via the internet. In fact it will permeate pretty much evrything in our lives, for work and entertainment.

A big feature of the CES show was Internet connected TV. From the DivX player letting you watch content from the Internet to your tv with no additional hardware required. Then we had Yahoo going big on widgets via its Connected TV service, Yahoo lets users with Internet connected televisions to do things like make a playlists, chat about a show they are watching with friends on Facebook and Twitter. Check out the weather orĀ  stock quotes and a million other apps that will be coming soon. If you have an iPhone, you know what it will kind of be.

Then there is another TV App product for the Internet TV market from Samsung, who is copying the “app store” concept from Apple to create a marketplace for applications to run straight on your tv set. The beauty is that as there are always new apps for the iPhone, expect Samsung and its application makers to provide you with everything from weather to games to streaming movies from Netflix.

Then of course, there is Microsoft. The company’s CEO Steve Ballmer devoted a significant portion of his opening keynote speech to Xbox Live, its platform that connects the console to the Web for social gaming and other forms of digital content.

In the future, Xbox Live will become a platform for much more going head on with other companies looking to capitalize on the Internet connected TV trend.

If we could see into the future, we would see that the Internet is becoming almost as common, prolific and necessary as electricity and will all the new gadgets and gizmos dependent upon it, will soon become our fourth utility.
