CBS confirmed recent rumours that the series, which stars Josh Randor, Neil Patrick Harris, Jason Segal, Cobie Smulders, and Alyson Hannigan, will return in the fall premiere season for a ninth and final run, but with little information on the number or details of the episodes involved.
The season will, however, contain the reveal of the mother to the children of main character Ted (Randor), an ongoing plot point that has ran since the show began 7 years and 174 episodes ago.
Nina Tassler, entertainment president of CBS, said of the extension to their prize show: “Through eight years, How I Met Your Mother has mastered the art of leading-edge comedy, emotional water-cooler moments and pop culture catchphrases. We are excited… to tell the final chapter and reveal television’s most mysterious mother to some of TV’s most passionate fans.”
Set to continue airing in its regular Monday timeslot, the sitcom will hope it can add to its numerous award nominations and victories accumulated over the years (including a ‘People’s Choice Award’ for the ‘Best TV Network Comedy’ won last year), not to mention consistently high ratings, while the creators have also expressed their previous desire to provide a satisfying ending creatively both for themselves and their fans, but to what extent will any of those goals be achieved?
