New USB Drive Joins Swiss Army Untensils

Ever been lost in a mountain or wilderness and wondering whether or not your entire digital film collection is filed away and secure, ready to be watched straight after you are rescued? That potential issue has now been amended, after the Iback (Switzerland)-based company Victorinox, the world’s sole big-name developers of the world-famous and multi-functional Swiss Army knife, plan an upcoming release of their product complete with a 1TB memory stick.

First revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas (USA) last month, the ‘Victorinox Solid State Drive (SSD)’ and ‘Slim USB 3.0′ models have been produced for both military and consumer use, with plans to ‘redefine portable secure storage’ by giving consumers the chance to add the detachable USB drive to their pocket-sized survival kit.

With sizes ranging from 16GB up to 1TB, Victorinox made claims at the CES that the device is ready to ’withstand a range of environmental and daily use factors’, all whilst maintaining ’the Swiss Army legacy of flawlessly designed products that endure’.

While the company has incorporated a memory stick into their products before, this is thought to be the first serious application of this combination, and while the design was probably built with military use, safety, and personal well-being in mind (such as files that would help to communicate with people via a foreign computer when lost) rather than storing videos, it is a purpose that could quite feasibly fit into the device’s make-up.

Victorinox ‘head of electronics’ Andrea Huder said of the company’s ‘SSD’: “The Victorinox Swiss Army brand is synonymous with everyday ‘survival’ tools and we continue to evolve our product offerings in the electronics division to provide solutions for living in a technology-focused world. The addition of the Victorinox SSD and Slim 3.0 to the flash USB line provides consumers with a quick and reliable way to store, transport and protect their personal and professional documents.”

The SSD will feature what they describe as the world’s smallest ‘high-capacity’ drive of its kind (with available sizes of 16GB, 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, and 1TB), and is built seamlessly into the version of the Swiss Army knife alongside its more traditional tools, such as knifes, [nail] files, screwdrivers, and scissors. With a detachability option for the USB segment, Victorinox has also put travelling with the drive in mind, with the ability to switch the SSD to a USB-only ‘body’ that provides a more flight-friendly outlook than numerous blades and sharp tools.

The new products launched by Victorinox will also provide a good way of protecting the USB drive, as untrained people attempting to reach the computer plug-in would most likely risk getting cut several times before picking out the function they were after, possibly giving a new meaning to the word ‘tera-bite‘. But will this weapon/storage tool pack a multi-functional punch in the market?

Youtube Views Hit 4 Billion Daily Thanks To Mobile And Smart TV

Video consumption is going through the roof as more Youtube videos are being watched than ever before. YouTube have revealed they now stream around 4 billion videos daily. That is an increase of 25% since May 2011.

An impressive increase in the space of a mere eight months and a sure sign that video is being consumed more and more on mobile devices and connected smart TV sets. Decembers Comscore video rankings showed that Youtube blew away the competition with over 157 million viewers watching close to 22 billion videos.

In a report by Reuters, Youtube say the increase in video watching is simply due to the service being available on more devices such as mobile phones, tablets and web-connected televisions. A YouTube app is part of most Web-connected media players, set-top boxes, Blu-ray players and games consoles.

Add to this fact that Youtube are also adding better quality and long form content, and they should be happy bunnies? But it seems all is not so rosy as advertising revenue still dissapoints.

Possibly due to the user generated naffness of most Youtube video, the company say that less than 11% of videos viewed each week (approx 3 billion) are generating any ad revenue. Youtube make around $5 billion per year in advertising revenue.

As good quality content generates the revenue, it may explain the launch of YouTube’s third-party branded content channels last year.

Other facts released by the video giant include, users upload 60 hours of video every minute and every second users are uploading an hour of video. To celebrate that fact, YouTube have a dedicated website called onehourpersecond.com that shows viewers an hour per second of video in visual form.

Viewers Fall For New Falling Over YouTube Craze

While most people in 2011 will have heard of the strange Internet-assisted craze known as ‘planking’ (in which people film or take pictures of themselves laying flat-out in everyday or odd locations), it seems as though 2012 could see the rise of ‘falling’.

Obviously a video-only viral hit, ‘falling’ composes of the participants, in a place where there would generally be a crowd (with supermarkets a popular option), deliberately slipping up to try and get a reaction from the unwitting people nearby. A person said to be known as a ‘co-faller’ secretly films the procedure.

The potential new craze is so far limited to just one major video, created by YouTube channel JStuStudios, but in the one month it has been online it has seen over 750,000 hits. The channel describes the video (which can be seen below) as: “Now that Cone-ing is old, it’s time for a new wave of fun! FALLING!! Sometimes when people fall, you can’t help but to laugh, and that’s exactly what we are trying to do. From realistic falls and hilarious noises to stupid looking falls, we got you covered here in the Best Falls we have gotten so far!”

The upcoming craze follows on from a number of odd activities which have become popular in recent times, such as planking, ‘cone-ing’ (grabbing an ice cream by the wrong end), ‘ghost-ride the whip’ (dancing around a slow-moving car), and ‘caging’ (another ‘invented’ by JStuStudios, where a person is filmed as being trapped in a cage on roadsides), how will ‘falling’ stack up in the crazy stakes? It is funny, just not in the way that they might want it to be…

YouTube Filters Their Way Into Classrooms

YouTube have unveiled a new branch of their popular online video service tailor-made for classrooms, teachers, and students. The service, known simply as ‘YouTube for Schools’, is designed specifically towards educational institutions such as schools (all ages), colleges, and universities, in a bid to bring together the ‘school-friendly’ content on the site into distinct categories to aid teachers in providing video-based lessons.

The move is thought to have come mainly from the fact that with YouTube accessible in schools, students will often get distracted by the latest viral clips, but when school moderators try to prevent this, the usual approach is to block the website altogether, meaning that the site, wanting to promote a middle ground, has developed this compromise system, which blocks out all non-educational content along with all comments pages in order to provide a ‘safe learning environment’.

‘YouTube for Schools’ project manager Brian Truong said of the Google-owned video giant’s reasoning behind creating the new service: “We’ve been hearing from teachers that they want to use the vast array of educational videos on YouTube in their classrooms, but are concerned that students will be distracted by the latest music video or cute cat, or a video that wasn’t appropriate for students. While schools that restrict access to YouTube may solve this distraction concern, they also limit access to hundreds of thousands of educational videos on YouTube that could help bring photosynthesis to life, or show what life was like in ancient Greece.”

With ‘YouTube for Schools’ enabled, member schools (who can sign-up for free) are automatically able to redirect the basic YouTube site onto the educational version when connected to the school’s network, with teachers and administrators given passwords in order to be able to access the website’s full catalogue of content.

With educational advice also in place through a ‘YouTube for Teachers’ sub-category, the new service looks to offer a streamlined approach to accessing educational content, with over 400 subject-themed playlists available upon launch to make it easier for specific content to be found. YouTube Plan Live Space Broadcast

As one of the most popular websites on the Internet, Google-owned YouTube now seek to go where no site has gone before, as they prepare a live broadcast, from the International Space Station (ISS), giving teenage students the opportunity to inspire the focus of the stream.

As part of an innovative contest in association with Chinese computer company Lenovo, the project was the brainchild of Zahaan Bharmal, head of marketing in Google’s Middle East & Africa division, who believes that the competition can ‘inspire the next generation of scientists’. YouTube and Lenovo have spared no expense in finding big names to judge the contest, with Stephen Hawking, NASA representatives William Gerstenmaier and Leland Melvin, astronauts Samantha Cristoforetti (Europe) and Akihito Hoshide (Japan), and the founder of Cirque du Soleil, Guy Laliberte forming a 6-person panel.

14-18 year-olds (as single entries or teams of up to 3) will be invited to submit their ideas (by the deadline of 7 December 2011) for scientific experiments, where an initial 6 regional winners will be rewarded with a trip to Washington DC (USA) to take part in an anti-gravity flight. Following that, two global winners will be chosen (one aged 14-16 and the other 17-18), who along with seeing their own experiment performed live on YouTube, will choose between seeing the space shuttle carrying the experiment launch in Japan, or take a training session at the Star City Training Camp (Russia).

The two winning entries will then be performed by professional astronauts at the International Space Station, with the events streaming live to YouTube viewers, which will have a good potential audience considering that the website have already started advertising the contest. Bharmal expressed his hope that the project will inspire young people to take a keen interest in different subjects, as he had been inspired by space himself, and went on to study physics at Oxford University (England) and eventually move on to Google’s marketing team.

Bharmal said of his personal experiences: “Space changed my life. When I was teenager I wasn’t interested in anything. Being interested in space motivated me to study hard and work hard. If our competition can just play a small part in getting kids interested in science, then we’ll be very, very happy. My vision is the final live stream will be the world’s largest science classroom.”

WireWax Bring iPad Taggable Videos Within Touching Distance

Video tagging specialist company WireWax have revealed an update to their service that sees it become applicable with Apple’s iPad tablet computer, offering media companies an opportunity to further enhance their ‘tagging’ strategies on video clips to a more detailed and interactive extent.

The company, who are based in London (England) are now providing their updated service to media firms, who are able to tag faces and objects (including ‘moveable tags’ with in-video motion sensor technology) within the clips, which when paused bring up a number of popular links offering more information on the topic at hand.

This includes redirections to websites such as Wikipedia or Facebook (for people tagged), and to shopping websites such as Amazon (e.g. for people wanting to buy a featured piece of clothing), amongst other uses.

Having first worked with tablet computers in December 2010, the service is now expanding to a more widespread presence on the device, moving from an exclusive version for their ‘creative partners’, to one that is more open in term of ‘tag’ makers, with all customers and members of the service now able to create their tags for iPad use.

With their unique ‘motion-sensor technology’, they are able to oversee video tags in what could be seen as a form of a hybrid between the face-tagging on Facebook photos and the stationary in-video links often seen on YouTube. This development seems to be the proudest development of the company, and one which they describe as ’a milestone in future of interactive video’.

WireWax’s chief executive Steve Callanan said of his company’s update on iPad: “We believe the latest incarnation of software on the iPad will open the product up to a much wider audience and are really excited about the opportunities of merging taggable and touchable video technology. It’s clear to see that there is huge potential in the marketplace right now for this technology and that the possibilities for interactive taggable video are quite simply endless.”

A former satisfied customer Spencer Hyman, of radio station Last.fm also praised WireWax, stating: “If you take the power of video and combine it with interactivity it’s obvious that the experience of watching stuff becomes more dynamic and engaging. Add the emergence of touch and then it gets exciting – and that’s where WireWax fits – it gives creatives of all levels of sophistication and maturity a platform to seize these two tidal waves.”

While developments in this field of media are bound to continue in the future, WireWax can at least enjoy the fact that they are currently the only major presence in the interactive video tagging market. Below is a video clip of WireWax in action on the iPad:

Apple TV have revealed a new software update to their streaming system, with a new feature adding the option for users to view already-purchased (from iTunes store) content online and immediately ready for watching on-demand without loading times not only on Apple TV but on any other iOS devices, such as iPhone and iPad.

The Apple TV Internet-connected box, currently valued at $99, is also able to purchase Apple and external content (including TV shows) straight from the comfort of the box itself, with all transactions and on-demand screenings being made direct through Apple’s official servers.

Apple’s allowance of purchasable videos is thought to be a bold move, with the company able to show a greater selection of content than the previous (and limited) rental-only system they had in place before. The move to host purchased content on Apple servers (not a great expense for such a wealthy company) could also free up plenty of space on Apple customers’ iOS devices, where the videos were previously stored.

A further update brings online video company Vimeo into the mix in a similar manner to the YouTube and Flickr ‘apps’ on the service. Rumours are also suggesting that the services will soon not be exclusive to Apple TV, with similar updates to the iPhone and iPad also in the works through the Apple-server developments, given the title of ‘iCloud’.

ABI Reaserch’s digital-home analyst Michael Inouye reported on the developments: “To some this might sound like a small change, but this step further enhances the cloud strategy — namely iCloud, in this case — and more tightly integrates the iTunes/Apple experience across devices,” he said. “It sounds as if this update is limited to TV shows for the time being, but movie purchases might not be too far down the road.”

Sounds like a good move, especially if purchased content sitting on the cloud can be played on the new Apple connected TV due in 2012.

WalMart Launch Vudu Streaming On Walmart.com

WalMart on Tuesday began streaming movies on the same day that they come out on DVD/Blu-Ray, in another bid to take a piece of the movie rental and streaming business from Netflix, who coincidently just increased their subscription prices.

WalMart, the worlds second largest retailer, said it will fully integrate the online video service Vudu that it gained last year on to its website Walmart.com.

Vudu is a cloud based video and movie service that lets customers rent or buy movies over the Internet and stream them to their TV sets, Blu-Ray players and a variety of Vudu enabled devices such as the PS3 and HDTV’s from LG Electronics, Sharp and Panasonic.

WalMart purchased video streaming service Vudu 18 months ago and now offers 20,000 titles that can be viewed on almost any device with Internet access, from computers to televisions to Sony’s PlayStation 3 and other Blu-Ray disc players.

Movies are available at WalMart to rent for $1-$5.99 or to purchase for $4.99 and up. WalMart is not offering any subscriptions, making its service more similar to Apple’s iTunes store, which charges $3.99 to rent newly released movies and $14.99 to buy a movie.

As of March, Netflix had 22.8 million subscribers in the US. about 34 thousand more than the number of households subscribing to Comcast’s cable TV service.

WalMart who are based in Bentonville have tested the movie rental waters before. It previously offered a DVD by mail service that cost $12.97 per month for two titles and $17.36 per month for three titles.

That was not a success, but we all know that the streaming market is a totally different ball game.

Amazon Forge Streaming Deal With CBS

Amazon has officially beefed up its rivalry with Netflix and Hulu by securing more content for their on-demand streaming service.

The Seattle based online retailer said on Wednesday that it has reached its first deal for content licensing with major TV network CBS. that strenthens their online streaming video services.

“We’re following what our customers are doing in the marketplace,” Cameron Janes head of Amazon’s digital video. “We’re watching customers want to consume more and more of our products digitally.”

The move substantially bolsters Amazon’s streaming inventory, bringing the number of tv shows and movies available on its subscription service Prime to 8,000. They also recently beefed up the service by adding over 1,000 titles in June.

The shows include “The Tudors,” “Numb3rs,” “Medium,” “Cheers,” and the entire “Star Trek” franchise, roughly the same offerings that CBS makes available through a pact it signed with Netflix last February. The collection will be available to Their Prime members at no extra cost.

Now that Netflix has stopped offering streaming at no additional cost to DVD plan subscribers, Amazon is stepping up in hope to fill the gap.

Amazon didn’t seem to have much effect when it began to offer 5,000 videos as cost free bonuses to Prime members in February. The options were up to 6,000 last week, but the CBS deal pushes the options up to an impressive 8,000 titles.

A Barclays Capital report on Wednesday said Amazon would have to invest significant capital and incur losses to gain in the industry, though “clearly competition is ramping and we believe Netflix may be more vulnerable now given its recent pricing changes.”

It puts Amazon in a good content position for when they launch their range of tablet PC’s later this year.

Orb Live Brings Streaming Online TV To Mobile Devices

Orb Live is a service which lets users to sync streaming on mobile devices from the home PC or Mac. Orb Live is available for iOS (Android coming soon) for $9.99, and has no additional subscription fees.

The app lets you watch much more content from services such as Hulu, ABC, CBS, FOX and ESPN, which is an improvment on Orb’s PS3 disc costing $20. That service only offered YouTube along with Comedy Central, and pay services such as Netflix and Amazon.

The Orb Live app also has premium online content via services such as Netflix and Amazon Video on Demand. It also syncs with users music files, online music, video, photos and more.

Speaking about the service, Joe Costello, CEO of Orb Networks said, “Now, consumers can use Orb Live to watch their favorite TV shows, sports and movies anywhere, on their mobile phone, without any additional subscription fees. No matter where they are, people can use their mobile phone to get the same great content that is available on their home PC for watching at the beach, on the soccer field, at the airport or on a commuter train.”

YouTube Unveils New Design Cosmic Panda

YouTube has just unveiled its new design that makes it look more like a catch-up TV service. It is called Project Panda and it looks pretty swish.

The new design makes major changes to the way playlists are used, moving them sometimes from a sidebar to a scrolling horizontal thumbnail bar just below the video you’re viewing.

The Videos are now set against a darker background to lower the contrast between the page background and video content.

Thumbnails are also bigger, and on the playlists they show up right under the video your watching.

Videos also come in three sizes rather than two, plus theres a fullscreen option. Then the Add to, and Share buttons are visually set off from the video controls to cleanly separate viewing from organizing.

Cosmic Panda’s biggest other big change is in channel customization. You can choose from four templates:

The Branding tab on the channel setup page makes for fewer clicks to add a background image or change your profile picture or avatar.

You can also keep videos running when moving between videos, playlists, and channels. Unfortunatly this is only available in Chrome Webbrowser.

Cosmic Panda does put YouTube’s look and feel and ease of use around where it should be.

YouTube Video Views Hit 3 Billion Daily

With their sixth birthday approaching, Youtube have announced the latest viewing figures, which are pretty mind bogglingly huge. The top video destination in the world says that worldwide video views have grown 50% in just the last year, hitting a massive 3 billion views every day.

They also revealed that uploading of video has increased by over a third within the last six months.Or in a way to blow your mind further, the figures are the equivalent of “nearly half the world’s population watching a YouTube video each day,” or to put another way, “each US resident watching at least nine videos a day.”

The video site said in a blog post announcing the news:- “For the last six years we’ve grown and evolved in our quest to push video forward and deliver the best possible experience to you.”

Youtube are currently making a lot of changes to the site, from raising the length of user submitted video from 10 minutes to 15 minutes. Launching a movie rental service and also launching a channel exclusively for live events.

Tesco Buys Chunk Of Blinkbox And Enters The Online TV Market

Move over Wal-Mart, the UK’s biggest foodchain, Tesco is moving into the online TV arena. Their home entertainment sector has acquired a majority stake in the Blinkbox VOD service that the company says will help position them for “the next stage in the internet-driven revolution in home entertainment”.

Blinkbox streams video to over 2 million viewers each month and has a catalogue of 9,000 plus movies and TV shows available for rent or to buy, as well as a selection of free movies, TV shows and trailers. The service can be viewed on PC, Mac, PS3 console, tablet devices and internet enabled connected TV sets.

The entry into this market by Tesco will shake up the UK online TV space with competition from big players including Amazon, with their own VOD service and the LoveFilm service. They may also be looking to tap into the Sky and Virgin Media market. Not forgetting the expected Netflix UK launch.

As the worlds third largest retail store, Tesco will have seen the success of music and movie downloading services such as Apple’s iTunes. Selling books via the web have also changed the entertainment retail landscape.

Tesco acquisition shows that the company is very much aware of these changing consumer habits, and it comes one day after the group announced flat sales in the UK for 2010/11 financial year. They have aquired 80% of Blinkbox from Eden Ventures and Nordic Venture Partners.

Richard Brasher, Tesco UK CEO said that the deal will offer customers something different:- “The acquisition of Blinkbox, together with a range of other services currently in development, means we can link physical purchase of a product to the building of digital collections in a new and seamless way,” he said.

For Blinkbox, Michael Comish CEO said “it is an exciting time for such a partnership considering how accessible entertainment is becoming for consumers”.

It is an interesting move as it seems that when you now buy a DVD from Tesco, you will get the virtual film rights to watch anywhere and on any product you like. That will make other retail outlets look to offer a similar service.

Google Video Hosting Comes To An End

It is the end of a video hosting era. If you have any videos stored at Google’s “Google Video” service, then maybe you should head over there and grab them. Google have decided to inform via email to users that it is closing down the video hosting service. Most users probably realise by now as Google has stopped taking video uploads for 2 of years now.

Google is asking users to migrate their video material to YouTube, its video site. Google’s move is not unexpected, with YouTube’s place in the market. The Google Video service began in 2005, the year before Google bought YouTube for a bank busting $1.65 billion. Google said: ”We would instead focus its efforts on video search technologies.”

Here’s the email that went out:-

Dear Google Video User,

Later this month, hosted video content on Google Video will no longer be available for playback. Google Video stopped taking uploads in May 2009 and now we’re removing the remaining hosted content. We’ve always maintained that the strength of Google Video is its ability to let people search videos from across the web, regardless of where those videos are hosted. And this move will enable us to focus on developing these technologies further to the benefit of searchers worldwide.

On April 29, 2011, videos that have been uploaded to Google Video will no longer be available for playback. We’ve added a Download button to the video status page, so you can download any video content you want to save. If you don’t want to download your content, you don’t need to do anything. (The Download feature will be disabled after May 13, 2011.)

We encourage you to move to your content to YouTube if you haven’t done so already. YouTube offers many video hosting options including the ability to share your videos privately or in an unlisted manner. To learn more go here.

Go to the Video Status page.To download a video to your computer, click the Download Video link located on the right side of each of your videos in the Actions column.

Once a video has been downloaded, “Already Downloaded” will appear next to the Download Video link.

Blinkx Shows Streaming Ambition And Buys Burst Media

Blinkx the video search engine has aquired internet advertising network Burst Media which will allow it to better monetize it’s inventory. The deal which cost Blinkx around $30 million in cash and stock will help target niche markets against personalized ads.

Blinkx who are one of the top video destinations claim to have 35 million hours of video from around 530 content partners will now be able to put it’s search engine into the Burst network consisting of 5,000 plus publisher websites, claimed to have an audience of 130 million plus.

Burst claim to reach 61% of US video viewers and are experts at monetizing content from niche, small websites. The deal comes as internet advertising grows ever more important and is the quickest growing market in advertising.

Viewers are now used to watching pre-roll ads before video and afterwards which are effective and command a high price.

Speaking about the deal, Blinkx’s Chief Executive Suranga Chandratillake said that their advertisers were willing to pay much higher sums if the ad was directed at an audience known to be interested in the product or subject. He said that they can charge a much higher price per ad as they will be very highly targeted.

He said:- “Up until now, the primary barrier to further television advertising budgets moving online has been online video’s inability to match the sheer scale of audience that television can deliver. The acquisition … will allow us to overcome that challenge: by fusing Blinkx’s unique patented technology and large video index with Burst’s massive reach, we will have the potential to create personalized, online television that is watched by hundreds of millions of users.”

Earlier this year Blinkx launched it’s own API for connected hardware, designed to get it’s content on traditional tv sets and devices.

Eminem Reaches A Billion Hits

It used to be a gold disc that artists most clamoured for, but now it seems to be hitting that billion Youtube views that does it.

Celebrity tracking website FameCount.com has announced that with the cumulative total of ‘hits’ across his 28 official music videos placed on YouTube, rapper Eminem’s total view-count has reached over one billion, a coveted figure that only two other artists have reached.

With the announcement, Eminem becomes the first artist under a hip-hop category to reach the unique online level that only worldwide pop superstars Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber are at, with both latter performances owing much of their fairly recent rises to stardom to their YouTube videos. While Lady Gaga was the first to reach the never-before-seen heights of YouTube stardom, it is 16-year-old Bieber who is currently on top of the FameCount YouTube rankings, as he currently has over 1.3 billion hits across all of his videos, making him also the highest-ranked act in general on YouTube.

Eminem, meanwhile, has been known before the rise of online video sharing, and during his 13-year career in the recording industry, has won many awards for being one of the best in the market, but this achievement will surely signify a victory on this new-age method of recognition.

With Barbadian R&B singer Rhianna also nearing the milestone to make it a 4-member club, how long will it be before other artists can proudly display their viral credentials?

180m US Viewers Monthly For Online Movies And TV Shows

We all know that online tv is exploding in popularity and number watchers may be interested to know that 180 million viewers in the US are eagerly streaming video on-line every month, that is representative of around 85 % of the Internet population.

The average video viewer consumes around two hundred videos per month, for a total of thirteen hours viewing time. This may seem a lot but the figures include shorts from Youtube etc.

The stats come from Comscore who’s Dan Piech, speaking at the OMMA Video convention in SF said there had been a certain move towards watchers of premium video (Tv shows, movies) viewing their content online. 8% of TV fans viewed their best shows on-line in 2010, up from 4 % last year.

The prevailing concern that a lot of people do this (70 %) would be to view an show they have missed on the telly, but 57 % tell of “convenience” as their major reason for watching on the internet and 56 % do this to view an old show.

Finally, 42 % say they view tv on the internet as it has fewer adverts. Online video has seen a large rise in advert volume and duration in 2010 and beyond, nevertheless, and viewers are getting frustrated.

ComScore states that 5-6.5 min’s of adverts each show will be the limit many people are prepared to watch on-line. In 2009, that number was 6-7 min’s. On-line visitors want a lot a less number of adverts. The good thing is that many TV shows have not exceeded this limit. Most premium video has 5 min’s (or fewer) of adverts and commercials.

And Although online video viewing appears to have doubled year-to-year, it is still in its infancy. 13 hrs per month is nothing in comparison with the 140+ hrs most People in america spend watching tv.

Still, it’s a start. As more and more content becomes available, and Internet Televisions start to fill the marketplace, the change will end up much more dramatic.

Networks Clamber For Golden Voice Hobo

A variety of networks are currently clambering over the chance to sign up the newest great voiceover talent, which is not an unusual scenario until you consider that this aspiring announcer is a 54-year-old hobo from Columbus (OH). Former radio announcer Ted Williams, who had been homeless for almost 15 years until this week, has seen his life turn around in a matter of days after his self-proclaimed ’golden voice’ went viral on YouTube.

Ted, who currently has over 11 million hits on a video of him made by the Columbus Dispatch, has been compared to Scottish singer Susan Boyle after the similarities (middle-aged, poor (Susan Boyle lived in a council-owned house), unassuming, vocal talent) with their respective rises to fame on YouTube. The video was first put on YouTube on Monday, and while the man himself has now cleaned up for a series of talk show appearances this week, offers for his future are already being tabled. It has been labelled as the first ‘feel-good’ story of 2011, but it will surely also be the most memorable week of Ted’s life, having began it offering to show off his ‘God-given’ radio voice in exchange for $1.

The first offer for Ted’s services has come from his local NBA basketball franchise, the Cleveland Cavaliers, who are offering a house, and a well-paid, full-time position as announcer for the ‘Cavs’ and their home venue, the Quicken Loans Arena, and the arena’s title sponsors, who are offering to pay the mortgage on the house. A joint-venture website from the Cavs and Quicken Loans has also been hastily set up, allowing fans to comment and persuade Ted to take the job. When told about the offer, he exclaimed: “That’s the best deal ever!”

It seems that any other suitors will have to step up their game for the chance to entice Williams’ services, with interested parties rumoured to include the NFL, NFL Films, ESPN, MTV, and a selection of local TV and radio stations, with many more big names tipped to step into the race at some point.

After he chooses a contract, his redemption will be complete, after the past decade saw him battle with drugs, alcohol, and criminal behaviour while trying to get his life back (although he claims to have been sober for the past 2 years). Further opportunities may also be present, as Hollywood producers may want him to sell his incredible story to the big screen at a later date.

Youtube Looking To Buy Independent Next New Networks

Youtube getting all highbrow

Youtube, in their quest to become a premium content provider, are said to be looking at acquiring Next New Networks, an independent company who produce and distribute viral videos from a pool of about 65 semi-professional filmmakers. The company have produced viral music hits such as ‘Bed Intruder Song’ and ‘Glitter Puke’. These videos managed to get around 110 million views between them.

Next New Networks based in New York, create video of their own and also distribute from independent suppliers via it’s Next New Creators program. The current revenue model pays contributors a share of advertising revenue, a bit like Youtube does already with certain content providers. If brought out by Google (owners of Youtube), then it would turn thye video site into a content producer rather than just an aggregator service.

It seems that Youtube’s main attraction for buying the company is their network of independent filmmakers. Google have, since they purchased Youtube for $1.65 billion in 2006 been looking to both improve the content and revenue of the video site. They have already had an independent movie on demand trial from the Sundance film festival earlier this year.

By adding Next New Networks to their portfolio, Youtube are hoping to become more accepted as a serious online tv contender. and of course they would have some content to stream on Google TV as well.

Blinkx Looking To Place Its Video Service On YouView

The Video search engine operator Blinkx is said to be in talks with YouView and hopes it’s services will be available on the platform at the big launch next year.

“We know the YouView team very well and we are involved in the various processes they currently have running with the tech teams,” Blinkx founder and chief exec Suranga Chandratillake said at the Reuters Global Media Summit via a videolink from New York on Wednesday.

“At the moment everything they are doing is internal technology but they have a number of programmes to interact and engage with external technology and content providers, and where appropriate we are involved in those processes. We certainly want to be on that platform in some way, in what way depends on what the platform ends up looking like.”

YouView, which started out as Project Canvas, is a partnership between the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Five, BT, TalkTalk and Arqiva, which will offer digital terrestrial channels and Internet delivered TV services via a set top box connected to the TV set. It hopes to launch next year.

Chandratillake told the summit he believed YouView had a better chance of success than the efforts of others such as Google and Microsoft to break into the TV market because its backers were mostly broadcasters and therefore understand the TV market.

“It feels like a better stab than almost anyone else has had so far,” he said.

Blinkx is one of the worlds top video sites and has indexed more than 35 million hours of audio, video, viral and TV content using its search technology. It generates ad revenue at the search stage and then also within the playback if the video is shown on its own site or on one of its partners’ sites.

The company is moving into the emerging mobile and tablet video online market, and said earlier on Wednesday that its video app for the android operating system, which is already available on Samsung’s Galaxy S smartphone, had been selected for Samsung’s Galaxy Tab device.

Chandratillake said advertisers were not yet willing to spend money on mobile and tablet video advertising, but said he expected that to change.

“Most people look at the tablet platform as being too early and they don’t understand it yet. It’s a bit like mobile, but there are a few people who advertise on it and the rates are slightly higher.” he said.

Blinkx may also be willing to charge for content at a future date, he said, and the most likely platforms for this would be TV and mobile, as consumers are already used to paying for content.

“We’re not selling any content to end users yet because on the Web it’s all based on advertising, but the point is we have the agreements in place should we decide to charge for content on these other platforms in the future,” he also said.

Blinx will just be one of many video sites trying to get on the YouView platform, but at least it has got in early.

Youtube Look To Expand Movie Selection With Miramax Deal

Youtube may be expanding its movie selection

In their ongoing mission to secure premium content and partners, Google are in discussions with the soon to be new owners of Miramax to secure streaming rights to their catalogue of movies on Youtube. Miramax movies include Indie classics Pulp Fiction, Clerks and Kill Bill amongst over 700 offerings.

The Miramax studio will be purchased reportedly by 10th December by Filmyard Holdings operated by Hollywood entrepreneur Ron Tutor and construction magnate Tom Barrack.

If the deal comes off, it will make both Youtube and Google TV more appealing and allow Google to charge for rentals and/or provide free with advertising bringing in the revenue. Currently Google TV is having a hard time supplying tv and movie content thro it’s connected television and set-top box online service. The major TV networks have blocked streaming from their websites being shown on Google’s platform.

Google is positioning itself to compete with the big online content providers of Apple and Netflix, as more and more viewers head online for their tv and movie fix. Youtube have already set up a free movie section to their website giving viewers access to hundreds of movies online.

The only downside for Google is that Netflix have also shown an interest in aquiring the rights.

YouTube Uploads At An All-Time High

How do the Youtube servers keep up?

YouTube, despite tallying over a billion views for its most popular videos, is managing to find room to grow, with the official YouTube blog posting that the video-sharing site’s many users manage to upload a total of around 35 hours of video content to the website per minute.

This mind boggling figure results in a total of around 2100 hours of content each hour, 50,400 a day, and a staggering 18,396,000 per year. This is an increase of 11 hours per minute compared to figures from March, which had counted an impressive day’s worth of content every minute.

These figures mean that at the current rate, it would be impossible to watch all of the websites content on your own in your life time, especially considering that in the time it takes to pour a cup of coffee, there could be as much as a literal day’s worth of new content online.

YouTube has claimed several attributes this unprecedented growth of uploading to several key factors, such as the decision to allow user-uploaded video time limits to go as high as 15 minutes (previously 10) per video, as well as the large file size limit of 2GB per upload, and with new technology widely available, ease and quickness of use when sharing experiences with the online world.

In an August report from market researcher ComScore, noted that Google’s array of video hosting sites, led in chief by YouTube, had seen over 143 million unique viewers from July alone, with around 1.8 billion non-unique viewing sessions. Another key stat was that the average online viewer spent approximately 282.7 minutes (just over 4 1/2 hours) watching YouTube videos. It is an unfathomable growth, but can it continue?

Youtube Finds Time Traveller In Charlie Chaplin Video

Time traveller in the 1920's?

Although many think of Youtube as a place to watch people falling over and other useless material, it may have now be responsible for something quite profound. Do you believe that time travel is possible? What if a video of someone on a mobile phone was found fifty years before mobiles existed?

In the process of watching old behind the scenes footage of a Charlie Chaplin movie called The Circus, George Clarke a film maker from Ireland found a strange looking woman making a call on a mobile phone! The problem being that it was filmed in the 1920′s and mobiles appeared in the 1980′s.

The video has been an internet viral sensation, picking up over 3.8 million views and generating in excess of 38,000 comments. In the video a woman walks past the cinema showing The Circus and is clearly seen holding what looks like a mobile cell phone/walkie talkie and apparently chatting away, but to whom?. Although the clip concerned is just a few seconds long, it has been repeated and slowed down so you can get a good look at the ‘Time Traveller’.

Many are claiming the footage is fake, but Clarke insists it has not and is convinced that she is involved in some kind of time travel. Says George:- “Attending the premiere at Manns Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, CA – the scene shows a large woman dressed in black with a hat hiding most of her face, with what can only be described as a mobile phone device – talking as she walks alone. I have studied this film for over a year now – showing it to over 100 people and at a film festival, yet no-one can give any explanation as to what she is doing. My only theory – as well as many others – is simple… a time traveler on a mobile phone.”

Many people are giving their opinions and explanations include the woman holding an ear trumpet, an ice block for toothache or even just scratching her ear. Whilst others are convinced it is authentic. Many are coming forward claiming that time travellers are shown in many other old movies and videos such as the JFK assassination and other historical moments..

Certainly the woman looks pretty strange, but if someone from the future had travelled back. Why would their cellphone look like a 1980′s Nokia model?

Vimeo Launch Internet Connected TV Interface

Vimeo Couch Mode

Video sharing website Vimeo are taking notice of the number of connected tv’s being sold, and adding a couch potato mode for big screen viewers. The new feature called Couch Mode is currently being beta tested and can be accessed from the Vimeo website. The current version works on Safari and Chrome browsers, so all new Google TV viewers can watch in full screen

The new feature announced in a company blog post said:- “Couch Mode is a special new section of Vimeo that allows you to watch collections of videos (such as Staff Picks, your inbox, your videos, etc.) completely uninterrupted like a TV channel. Just press play and grab the popcorn,”be a full-screen video player with huge navigation buttons and no intrusive user interface.

So, basically, anyone using a hammer for pressing the remote can use the video service. It allows viewers to choose from Staff picks (why?), a HD playlist and more importantly, your own favorite playlist. So just by pressing play, you can watch hours worth of video’s without interruption.

More options are/will become available, but the beauty of the system is both the full screen display and the fact that it is simple. Couch potato’s rejoice. If your pc only, then you can still see the big screen optimised site, just install the Safari or Chrome browser.
