The aging rocker accuses wealthy web executives of getting rich off the back of the ailing music industry, which loses vast sums of revenue every time music tracks and albums are illegally downloaded and shared.

Writing for a column in the New York Times, Bono said: “The immutable laws of bandwidth tell us we’re just a few years away from being able to download an entire season of  (TV show) 24 in 24 seconds.

“A decade’s worth of music file-sharing and swiping has made clear that the people it hurts are the creators… The people this reverse Robin Hooding benefits are rich service providers, whose swollen profits perfectly mirror the lost receipts of the music business.

“The only thing protecting the movie and TV industries from the fate that has befallen music and indeed the newspaper business is the size of the files.”

The “Beautiful Day” hitmaker believes the problem would be solved if internet service providers monitor their file-sharers and enforce strict controls, adding: “We know from America’s noble effort to stop child pornography, not to mention China’s ignoble effort to suppress online dissent, that it’s perfectly possible to track content…

“Perhaps movie moguls will succeed where musicians and their moguls have failed so far, and rally America to defend the most creative economy in the world, where music, film, TV and video games help to account for nearly four per cent of gross domestic product.”

I think Bono and his fellow stars would get a lot more sympathy if we actually saw them suffering, and having only 3 houses instead of 5 doesnt count.

Legally Free websites account for around 27% of the webs worldwide traffic, which is up from 13% in 2008. On the flip side, P2P file sharing represented 20% of all usage on the 2009 survey of 20 Internet service providers worldwide, compared with 32% in 2008.

Even though the amount of traffic consumed by file sharing apps is growing on an absolute basis, tv and video on demand services are growing more quickly, Sandvine CEO Dave Caputo said.

“Peer-to-peer is yesterday’s Internet story,” Caputo said. “Every category is growing in aggregate bandwidth, but bandwidth as a percentage is undergoing a massive shift to video.”

Sandvine’s 2009 Internet traffic trends report is based on data from more than 20 cable, DSL and fiber-to-the-home service provider networks representing 24 million subscribers worldwide.

An Internet-usage survey Cisco Systems issued last week also found P2P traffic had declined from previous levels, although it pegged peer-to-peer at 38%.

According to the Sandvine report, the mean average usage per subscriber is around 8 Gigabytes per month, while the median is about 3 Gbytes per month. The top 1% of Internet users accounts for nearly 25% of consumption, a cohort that uses 200 times the data per month as the average user.

The Internet’s peak-usage window shrank by two hours, from 6-11 p.m. in 2008 to 7-10 p.m. in 2009, in Sandvine’s analysis. During that “primetime” period, the usage profile among all users was roughly equivalent, whereas the heaviest users (sometimes called “bandwidth hogs”) use their connections 24 hours per day. “From 7 to 10 p.m., we’re all consumption kings,” Caputo said.

Given the 7-10 p.m. usage peak, Caputo noted, service providers have a strong incentive to try to encourage the use of non-real-time application at other times. “If you could shift some of that usage to the other 21 hours everybody would win,” he said.

The data for Sandvine’s report was gathered between Sept. 1-22 and captured the bits-per-second, per protocol and the number of active hosts per protocol on the network. The data does not include any subscriber-specific information, such as IP addresses.

Of course, if the currently free websites go down the pay to view route then peer-to-peer will come back with a vengeance. The networks may not like the word free, but its the only way to kill off piracy.

Geo targeting or geo gating, which the networks themselves refer to it restricts access to streaming content outside the countries to which they have the rights to broadcast. It seems a very outdated concept in these days of instant entertainment and the global community but until the networks sort out this mess we have to put up with it. Or do we?

Currently there seems to be a glimmer of positive news from Hulu and the BBC

The BBC’s website states:-

“Much of our website is aimed at UK users, so we negotiate rights to include video, audio, images and other types of content for the UK only. World rights are much more expensive, but we are hoping to make more audio and visual content available to our international audiences.”

Hulu’s statement reads:-

“Hulu is committed to making its content available worldwide. To do so, we must work through a number of legal and business issues, including obtaining international streaming rights. Know that we are working to make this happen and will continue to do so. Given the international background of the Hulu team, we have both a professional and personal interest in bringing Hulu to a global audience.
If you’d like, please leave us your email address and the region in which you live, and we will email you when our videos are available in your area.”

So what do you do while the networks try to find a workaround to the problem?

There is a roundabout solution if you happen to reside in another country and it is free to use. Watch Hulu Outside the USA. This information also applies to Watching the other big networks such as CBS, ABC, NBC and FOX TV episodes from other countries outside the USA.

The article explains that the current best option for watching Hulu outside the US is a program called Hotspot shield by Anchorfree. CEO of Anchorfree David Gorodyansky commented :- “Our job is not to promote Hulu or offer them in regions where they’re not available. We’re just enabling people to be private and secure online. What people choose to do once they’re private and secure is kind of their business.”

The company make revenue from an advertising banner that is displayed at the top of your screen as you watch the streams. So are these kinds of programs legal? Well, noone has been prosecuted yet and no case that i know of has been put before a court. And the liability would not be with the user anyway. If anyone where to get prosecuted it would be the program creator not the user. More likely that the networks will, when it becomes a sufficient annoyance work a way around the softwares geo cracking abilities.

They may of course not bother. After all viewers have many ways of viewing and downloading illegal content if they wish. So maybe the answer is an opening of the borders , and until thats possible. A little flexibility. After all the younger generation of this world are used to the web being full of free content. Not being restricted because they live in Europe and not the US and vice versa.

OK you get the idea they all have similar sounding names and are all pretty similar products.

So what exactly is the Satellite TV PC scam? Well after payment you will download a software program or even just a webpage link usually consisting of a list of free to view tv channels that are all available for free on worldtvpc.com. Thats pretty bad right? To watch These Internet TV channels you will need several free media players that are available for download from the internet. Windows Media Player and Apples Quicktime are two of the most common. The difference between streaming and downloading

If your going to watch TV on your PC live or in ‘real time’ then the data has to be sent to your PC over the internet fast enough so you can watch without any hold ups. If your connection isnt up to it and cannot stream the video quick enough, the end result will be freezing screen, and patchy viewing quality whilst your computer waits for parts of the program to load up.

However already downloaded content does’nt have this problem as you download the entire video file before you start viewing. The downside with this is that the files are very large so if your broadband connection is on the slow side, you could be waiting for hours or even days!

These big files can also use up any capped broadband package allowance if you have it. You need to keep an eye on how much you are downloading as a single episode of 24, Grays anatomy or Desperate Housewives, for example, will use up several hundred megs of your data allownce.

How to download TV shows and Movies

At an upcoming conference in New York, Verizon will present their test results, which show that when an ISP cooperates with file-sharing, they can speed downloads an average of 60 percent.

This exciting P4P technology will soon start being utilised although you wont really notice apart from your download speeds increasing. Whoopeedoo.

You can now download movies, tv shows and music legally and keep your halo intact.

The terms file sharing and peer 2 peer have some pretty shady and negative connotations. Always being reported in the press due to yet another legal battle involving music and movie downloads, but did you know that there is nothing illegal about p2p networks? You can use them perfectly legally to share files and they are used legitimately by a great number of people.

Every one has heard of Napster the original p2p network created by 18 year old Boston student Shawn Fanning. This was at the time, mp3 and digital music players were just taking off. In a landmark case Napster was shut down but although the act of sharing digital files was illegal, Napster didnt actually host any files just let different people share between each other. and this made it hard to implicate Napster in any crime.

Napster was finally forced to close down in 2001

Whilst illegal share filing continues to be popular, the large corporations have recognised that they cannot stop this massive tide and are in fact embracing the concept. The benefits are numerous. Digital downloads are much more cost effective. Companies can now cut out the middleman and sell direct to you making more profits and charging less.

A number of companies have already jumped on the p2p bandwagon. Bittorrent the popular ‘legal’ torrent website has signed deals with high profile companies including Warner Bos, Twentieth Century Fox, and Paramount meaning a selection of Movies and TV shows are available to watch for free. The majority of content is charged for but interestingly the prices are significantly lower than shop prices.

There are many proponents of the $5 monthly subscription P2P model, with the revenue being shared out amongst Studios and actors, the movie and music industry would at least be able to bring in some revenue as opposed to none.

We have all in those quiet moments asked those philosophical questions.. Whats the meaning of life? What came first chicken or egg? What the hell is the difference between P2P and BitTorrents???

If you share my curiousity then read on and become intelligent. What is the difference between a P2P client and a Bit Torrent client?

Its not really that easy to answer because they are pretty similar with just subtle differences. They both make use of the collective to download and share files. Making use of many different PC’s that are hooked onto the network.

Bit Torrents sharing

Bit Torrents make use of multiple computers and receive any file in pieces/packets/chunks. The torrent breaks the files into small pieces, thus letting you download that precious file from many so that for every chunk you download, it gets uploaded to another person who wants it. It doesnt just get it from one host but shares the loads from many hosts or different people at the same time. This can make it a much faster system for transferring large files than a P2P network. After downloading the parts are combined into one and the file is on your hard drive ready for use.

BitTorrent is often referred to as ‘true P2P sharing’ because instead of publishers servers being used to distribute the files, BitTorrent users do the file serving themselves. The Torrent community of users voluntarily upload their files into the swarm and are motivated by the cooperative spirit. BitTorrent also adds incentives to generous users

The Torrent sharing philosiphy goes like this:-

if you share your files on Bit Torrent then your reward will be an increased download speed. However if you just leech and dont share your files then your download speeds will be slowed down. So in effect your generousity is rewarded. This downloading speed is controlled by the BitTorrent tracking servers. They will monitor all of the ‘swarm’ users. If a user shares files then the tracker servers reward you with and increased swarm bandwidth allocation. Dont share and you’ll find your downloading speed creeping around 1k per sec.

P2P Peer2Peer sharing

P2P or Peer 2 Peer is a host 2 host transfer where the entire file or files are transferred directly between 2 different computer users. You do have more knowledge as to who the files come from, but on the downside the speed of transfer is totally down to the speed that the other PC can send file data.

Both have their benefits and disadvantages, peer2peer (P2P) is good for downloading small files such as single track songs (but not cd’s), movie clips etc.
Bit Torrents are suitable more for the larger files. But i like to use FrostWire (p2p) for small files and Azures (torrent client) for large files.

And why do they do this you ask? Well its something called advertising. If they can keep us on their website then whilst you are viewing the content you are also subliminally being bombarded with advertising. OK firstly, do you have

Background programs running?

Programs running that you forgot about or automatically run ever time you boot your PC are the biggest slowdown. But luckily, this can be fixed quickly and for free… if you have background programs running simultaneously eating at your computers resources, there is not enough resources to run your streaming movies normally.

There are two remedies, if you like to get stuck into your system with your bare hands, use the remedy

All of the icons showing in your computer’s system tray are background programs using system memory. There will be more, but you can get a hint from what you see on the system tray. To view and stop all running background programs:

Press the the keys Ctrl + Alt + Delete at the same time.

Click the applications tab

Highlight any program running thats not needed and then click End Task.

Repeat to quit all programs except of course your browser which needs to be running or you’ll stop seeing this screen for a start.

Alternatively get Anti Spyware and use the feature which allows you to view running programs and to disable any of those running programs.

You should now have a lovely clean system. Is your PC running faster? If it is you will want to prevent those programs from restarting the next time you start the computer.

If you don’t want these background programs starting next time you run your PC, and you know what your doing, you can run msconfig from the run menu on your start button in your bottom left start button and completely disable whatever you find in the Startup tab. If you are not that experienced or nervous about playing with system settings and want a safe way to kill off those unneeded background programs, get the Anti spyware software. It has a neat feature allowing you to disable the startup programs safely.

Spyware:

Some software programs add themselves to your system start menu without even asking your permission. Sometimes you can click a link on a website or visit a hacker website that will install spyware on your pc without you knowing. Click here to get your system checked and fixed. Its free to try.

Defrag your hard drive:

This results from loading many programs over time, uninstalling and deleting. As each new Windows program is installed and uninstalled, it leaves behind parts of itself that can slow down or crash your computer. These are mostly .dlls and various other shared files.
Run the Window’s hard drive defragmenter (Defrag) at least once a month. It is in your System Tools menu. Look in program files – accessorries – System tools and run it.

Memory

Most modern PC’s have plenty of memory that is useful for buffering of TV and movie streams. If you have an old beast of a PC, you could be lacking system memory – You should probably upgrade to a bigger memory as its relatively cheap to buy but improves performance Big time.

Has this solved your slow running problems?? If not the only real answer to this problem is to pick up ERROR DOCTOR or just reinstall Windows onto your hard drive or run the recovery disc that came with your PC. This is a last resort measure as Reinstalling Windows means you will also have to reload all your programs and possibly drivers onto your system.
