Paul McCartney from the legendary pop group, The Beatles will soon move into the 21st century with live streaming of his performances.

Mr McCartney has had a busy week ahead of him, and in the midst of it, he will be performing songs from his new album, they will be stream from the concert for all to hear via iTunes.

On Thursday, the Beatle star will play songs from his new album titled “Kisses on the Bottom“, being released Tuesday February 7 (in the U.S.) and Monday in other parts of the world. The performance will take place at Capitol Records, where Kisses was recorded.

Paul McCartney will also be getting his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Thursday. Macca will be honored at a Friday gala as the 2012 MusiCares Person of the Year and play on the 54^th Annual Grammy Awards telecast on Sunday.

Digital Listening At An All-Time High

The digital revolution shows no signs of slowing down, and not even the radio airwaves are set to maintain their analogue tradition, as a new study suggests.

Figures produced by radio audience measurement organisation RAJAR imply that people listening to the radio through digital platforms has reached a total of nearly 27% of all UK audiences during 2011′s first quarter, with overall radio usage climbing to a record high.

This was reported as over 22.1 million weekly digital listeners, a 10.7% increase on the same measurement made last year, with the 26.9% percentage of digital users an increase of 0.4% on the previous quarter’s record alone.

RAJAR are also claiming that annual overall listening hours for digital services have also increased, with a 14.3% rise from 253m to 289m hours (both recorded at the year’s respective Q2).

Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) are clearly the most popular of the digital services, taking a total of 26.3%, though this share is down marginally from the previous quarter, and a good return from the 38.9% of UK residents who claim to own the necessary equipment for the DAB service.

Other figures showed that alternative radio methods are also in good demand, with digital TV radio through services such as Freeview and Sky responsible for 14.4% of all digital audiences in the quarter, and ‘Internet listening’ claiming a figure of 9.6%. Mobile phone radio came in with 14.5% for Q2.

An unofficial government agreement suggests that the ‘Digital Radio Switchover’ might begin in 2015, but it is thought that such a move is target-based, with at least half of all audiences using digital services before the move goes ahead. With a current 91.7% of the UK thought to listen to a radio each week, the service is not dying out as the growth of new content viewing methods would suggest, and it could take a lot to beat the majority that use analogue radio as a means of in-car entertainment, so how much will digital radio be able to grow from here?

iPlayer For UK Radio Stations To Launch This Month

The BBC are going to release an online radio player at the end of the month and will offer audio streams from every licensed UK radio station in the form of a Flash Player audio console.

It is likely to be called “Radioplayer”, it is a going to be an online player that intends to bridge the gap that people have listening to radio over the internet.

Stations in the UK usually offer streams, but there has not been a source that would allow you to get all UK stations in one place. Radioplayer, which has been developed with input from both the BBC and the Guardian, aims to fix this.

Currently the BBC’s iPlayer offers just the BBC’s radio streams. Radioplayer is looking to feature somewhere between 200 and 300 individual BBC and commercial services.

For audio, the console will have the normal audio controls, as well as a search feature and an option to save preset channels a bit like a car radio does.

Online radio streaming has been with us since most younger people can remember, from the capabilities of Winamp and iTunes to streams coming straight from individual websites. But Radioplayer will be the first time we’ll be able to get all UK radio channels, and all in the same place.

To begin with Radioplayer is going to be targeted at computers that have Flash Player installed. Later on, smartphones and tablets will get Radioplayer.

Apple devices will not have Radioplayer until a different audio format other than Flash is added, this might never happen, but in the online world, who can say whats going to happen.

BBC Record December For iPlayer Streaming Media

The BBC have announced that their iPlayer service has gained on its previous monthly record for the number of content requests and downloads during the month of December 2010.

BBC iPlayer had around 145 million requests for tv shows during the yuletide month and is up by 27% year to year when compared with December of 2009. It also completes a 3rd consecutive month of record growth for the catch-up-tv service.

Some shows drew the crowds more than others with more than 3 million requests made for the Top Gear Christmas special, with the programme taking the No.1 spot in the broadcaster’s list of most requested tv shows. No surprise though, as Top Gear and Doctor Who are consistently the most popular BBC shows.

Amongst other popular shows watched during December was (of course) the Doctor Who Christmas Special, The Apprentice with Alan Sugar , Top Gear as mentioned earlier, comedy show Come Fly With Me and not forgetting Eastenders.

The most popular radio show that people caught up with was the coverage of the cricket competition, the Ashes. The demand for all these tv shows saw a huge 27% increase in viewers since December 2009, with a 3% increase between November and December 2010.

The only numbers that did not see any noticable increase on the iPlayer were from mobile devices. In November 2010 the BBC were getting around 6 million and this stayed the same in the December. Daniel Danker, the general manager of programmes at the BBC, said: “These figures are a fantastic way to start the New Year and I’m looking forward to building on these while we continue to evolve and improve BBC iPlayer.”

The news also bodes well for the International Global iPlayer launch which is planned for this year as a subscription service.

Streaming TV On Its Way To South African Vodacom’s 3G Phones

African based Vodacom has released a streaming tv & video service for its 3G customers that allows viewing of popular TV shows and music videos on their SA Phones.

Working in conjunction with On Demand SA, Vodacom has released its mobile service that promises users complete seasons of popular international TV shows on cellphones.

“We’ll be releasing Season One of the shows, and soon we expect to catch up to be close to where the current season is, but it will never be the same season,” an On Demand SA rep told News24.

Vodacom has announced that a subscription of R75 per month or R20 per week for prepaid or contract customers, and though there is a “fair use” policy but a spokesperson insisted that it would not be acted upon.

“Look, there is a fair use policy and we don’t want people to play music videos and just leave their phones lying there, but no, we don’t want enforce it for now,” said a representative.

Their is no iPhone support yet.

The available TV shows will include Sex in the City, Grey’s Anatomy, South Park and Lost. While there are no South African TV shows available, Vodacom said that it would open the platform to local producers.

“The introduction of subscription video on demand with full length programming to the mobile environment heralds a new era in the growth of mobile video,” said Tony Kelly, CEO of the On Demand Group.

Unfortunately, Vodacom said in a statement that the popular iPhone is not currently supported, but that it has been added to the company’s “road map” for a future release.

While the streaming mobile video services has had some measure of popularity in the UK and the US, The past few years has seen far fewer people watching streams, though Vodacom would not say what the uptake in SA might be.

UK Government Has A Rethink Over Licence Fee For Catchup TV Viewers

The government has had a rethink over a licence fee payable for watching television via internet catchup TV services on computers and other internet enabled devices, which currently does not require the payment of a licence fee.

Jeremy Hunt the Culture Secretary has ruled out the introduction a licence fee for computer users, but has said that we will need to find a way to stop people watching material paid for by the licence fee for free.

“What we’ve said very clearly is that we accept the principle of the licence fee, the idea of a household tax to fund broadcasting that is ring-fenced,” the culture secretary Jeremy Hunt said on the Andrew Marr Show on the BBC. “We think that one of the reasons we have some of the best TV and broadcasting in the world in this country is because we have these different streams of income including the licence, including subscription income and including advertising.

“The way we collect it may have to be rethought because technology is changing, a lot of people are watching it on their PCs,” said Hunt. “We’re not going to introduce a PC licence fee and that is something that I do need to have discussions with the BBC to see what their ideas are.”

The BBC Trust expressed concern last year about the increasing number of viewers watching catch-up services and said that rules on licences should be clearer.

“The technological advances of recent years have seen significant developments in the ways in which people may choose to access television content, not least the BBC’s own iPlayer. In the immediate term, there needs to be clearer communication on the legal requirements for a TV,” it said in a review of licence fee collection.

The Trust said that while there was no immediate danger to the BBC’s income, changing viewing patterns could become a threat in the future.

“Some commentators have … predicted the licence fee will be undermined by new technology,” it said. “The licence fee collection is currently heavily reliant on the fact that almost 98% of households still use television sets (although this number has declined very slightly in the last year from 97.61% to 97.37%) and that viewing on new technologies tends to be supplementary to viewing on television.

“It is not yet clear whether households are likely to switch to internet streaming as the sole method of watching television, avoiding the use of a dedicated television set. It is clear, however, that this is happening in some segments research for the BBC Executive shows that 40% of students in halls of residence use a laptop as their main way to watch TV,” it said.

“Legislative change is likely to be required in order to reflect technology changes in the licence fee regulations and the Trust has therefore not explored this further within this review,” the BBC Trust said last year.

People who watch TV must have a TV licence if they watch live TV, whether on broadcast networks or if streamed over the internet. A home licence covers users for any watching on a wireless device. If that device is plugged into the mains electricity then the premises must have a licence or the viewer is committing an offence, the TV Licensing Authority has previously said.

Could the Growth Of Internet TV Be Slowed By Bandwidth Capping?

A leading market research company iSuppli, has said that AT&T’s recent decision to setup Capping Its Bandwidth and charge an extra fees for the heavy data usage on wireless devices could present a barrier to upcoming competition from Internet TV.

AT&T stopped its phone plan which has allowed subscribers unlimited Internet access. AT&T is seeking to limit the heavy data usage of smart phones such as Apple iPhone, and the iPad tablet. iSuppli has said that “The caps will make it difficult for any high-quality streaming application hoping to become a true TV substitute to get off the ground without the support of wireless operators”.

“By implementing caps now that don’t impinge on the way subscribers use the Internet today, cable and telco operators are able to create for themselves an advantageous situation,” William Kidd, director and principal analyst for financial services at iSuppli, said. “Under these circumstances, emerging media competitors must work more directly with the network owners before getting their services off the ground—as opposed to around them, as they may have previously hoped.”

New broadband subscribers around the world are expected to rise by 63.5 million in 2010, thats a rise of 8.4% when compared to a additional subscribers of around 58.5 million in 2009, this confirms the ongoing strengths of the broadband access market.

“Most of the emerging streaming Internet models are mistaken in postulating that they could displace, over time, traditional television and movie delivery mechanisms without paying for related network costs,” Kidd said. “However, such a theory is directly at odds with the ambitions of cable and satellite TV operators, which increasingly are unwilling to provide heavy data access through their networks for free especially if a way can be found to monetize ongoing data traffic into viable revenue streams.”

Although the broadband caps help to correctly price an access service for the small percentage of subscribers that take up a disproportionate share of network traffic usually through their heavy use of data streaming media presents unknown risks.

The vast majority of data subscribers on a broadband network, caps will only become relevant if users viewed low quality streaming media say, a 200kbps stream on a wireless device for three hours, or if a standard def TV signal on a wired network was streamed for approximately 25 hours. By the same token, streaming a high-definition TV signal could put a user in cap trouble in just 7 hours on the wired network of Comcast., the largest U.S. cable operator and Internet service provider for the home.

Additionally, consumers who consider the Internet as a true substitute for their big-screen TV, content would need to be comparable in both technical quality and entertainment value. And to achieve the same level of value, such content necessarily would be extremely high in bandwidth.

Internet TV Tax Coming Next Year Says Minister

Two things in life are certain, death and taxes. And for people who watch television on their computers, could be forced to pay an internet tv licence fee from as early as next year.

The people that do not own a TV set but watch shows on services such as the BBC’s iPlayer, ITV Player 4oD etc do not have to pay the £145.50 yearly charge. However the Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt said that this exemption may be stopped.

The MP reveals that he plans to discuss the matter with BBC’s Director General Mark Thompson when the corporation’s funding levels come up for review next year.

This follows evidence that more tv viewers are turning to online tv servies to watch their favourite programmes.

The BBC’s technology chief Erik Huggers has expressed a concern that some viewers are getting ‘a free ride’ by watching its shows on the internet rather than on television. He suggested increasing the cost of the TV licence to include the iPlayer.

But Mr Hunt said he would not be in favour of simply charging anyone who owned a computer in the same way that anyone who owns a TV has to pay the licence fee.

On the BBC1′s Andrew Marr show, he said: ‘What we have said very clearly is that we accept the principle of the licence fee which is the idea, if you like, of a household tax to fund public service broadcasting that is ring-fenced.

A review by the BBC’s governing body, the BBC Trust, revealed 40 per cent of students in halls of residence use a laptop as their main way to watch TV.

It admitted that their might be some viewers who ‘forgo live television entirely’ by using the catch-up services.

The BBC’s iPlayer makes some shows available for seven days after they were broadcast.

The TaxPayers’ Alliance described the licence fee as ‘increasingly outdated’. ‘The Government should be looking for a source of funding that means fewer people are charged for programmes they don’t watch or listen to,’ the spokesman for the TaxPayers’ Alliance said.

TV Broadcasters Rush To Launch Apps For The iPad

The iPad has been on sale in Europe for less than two months, and only in selected Countries but European tv networks are launching iPad and mobile apps and services.

The two continental giants RTL in Germany and France’s Canal Plus have launched apps providing live streaming of their network broadcasts this week. In the UK, the BBC said that 10% of all requests made by portable devices for its iPlayer catch up service last month came from iPad users. In the Netherlands commercial network SBS and pubweb NOS already have services ready for the iPad. Even the struggling commercial net Five is jumping on the iPad band wagon by announcing plans to launch a catch up TV app this autumn to coincide with the relaunch of its on demand service Demand Five.

European networks are hoping that Apple’s iPhone and its tablet could provide the launch pad for mobile TV and with it new lucrative revenue streams.

Cell phone use in Europe is higher than the U.S. and high-speed broadband is commonplace in all major centers. But the mobile television roll out in the region has been sluggish. Networks are counting on the iPad to change that.

The early signs are looking good. With RTL’s new live streaming app currently only available for the iPhone and iPod touch catapulted to the number two slot on Apple’s App Store in Germany in less than 24 hours after it was launch on Wednesday night. The service, which is free to download but charges users €1.59 a month ($2.00) after a 30-day trial period, allows live-streaming of RTL regular broadcasts, including hit formats “DSDS” and “Das Supertalent.” The RTL app also features an electronic program guide and push services for news and other events. In addition to the monthly charge, RTL includes tacks on pre-roll ads in front of its videos.

Robert Fahle, of the mobile services at RTL’s media division RTL interactive, said the network plans to launch an iPad ready app later this year, likely in time for the new television season this autumn.

We think the user base for the iPad will be different than for our iPhone and iPod apps,” Fahle said. “(iPhone users) typically use them several times a day for short periods getting news, the weather, checking out a short video. We expect the iPad’s larger screen will mean it is better suited to more and longer video and streaming content obviously ideal for a broadcaster like us.”

“Apps are an attractive business model, both paid and ad sponsored offerings,” said Manfred Neumann, the head of the mobile and new business at SevenOne Intermedia, a subsidiary of RTL competitor ProSiebenSat.1. SevenOne apps which will include live streaming services for hit format “Germany’s Next Top Model” and sports magazine “Ran” have already gained over one million downloads in the Germany.

The iPad’s launch in Germany, France, Spain, Italy and the U.K. on May 28th joined nicely with the lead up to the soccer World Cup. With broadcasters such as the BBC and Sky Deutschland saw mobile viewership spike for the tournament thanks in part to iPad apps allowing fans to stream games live on the go.

Broadcasters from Barcelona to Berlin are also happy about the technology’s potential but problems still do remain. Rights are a major issue. RTL are not streaming any of there imported U.S. films or series via its new app, as it doesn’t have the rights. The BBC’s popular news app is now only available outside the country after British newspapers complained the service might damage the market for their own applications.

Another issue is the mobile infrastructure. Europe’s 3G networks are a step ahead of the U.S. in terms of coverage and capacity but it is unclear if they can handle the amount of data needed to provide seamless streaming of popular events. Broadcasters in quite a few European countries reported having problems during live streamings of The World Cup games.

“There could be network capacity problems for mobile streaming,” admitted Robert Fahle of RTL Interactive. “We’ve seen before on the Internet that popular video content has resulted in capacity issues for online networks. But we don’t want to wait for new mobile networks. We want to use the structure that is in place and are all counting on new mobile-TV technologies to allow more video streaming in the future.”

For the European networks, still suffering from a lack of traditional TV advertising, the mobile iPad-driven future, can’t come quick enough.

Catch up radio streams online service plan by the BBC

If your a UK radio listener as well as a TV watcher then you could soon have instant online access to every radio station in the UK from a BBC online streaming service.

The BBC are planning to launch an online radio player available to every radio broadcaster by the end of the year. Using an application similar to the iPlayer users can search and listen to radio stations like the BBC’s catch up TV service but for radio.

The plan in the longer term would be to use it like a TV recorder is used now. Being able to live pause, put it on hard drive, listen to recordings from the past seven days and pre book radio also.

The preliminary proposals, which would need approval from the BBC Trust, would align the radio sector with the television industry, which already offers catch-up TV and the ability to pre-record programmes from both commercial and BBC channels.

They are also part of a BBC effort to prove that it can help out its cash strapped rivals by sharing its technology and software and work on a common standard.

Such proposals – which include plans to work with rival ITV on regional news, are all part of the corporation’s policy of promoting partnerships which it hopes will deflect from recent calls for its £3.5bn annual licence fee to be frozen or cut.

BBC director general Mark Thompson, indicated that the BBC’s commercial rivals needed help given the dire economic conditions of much of the ad-supported industry: “Is the BBC going to stand by or take tangible, measurable steps to partner, support and share some of its advantages to other media players?” he said.

The BBC move to partner old rivals is understood to have received tacit backing from the government. Communications minister Stephen Carter is keen to promote digital radio, which has failed to make a viable return for most commercial operators.

Andrew Harrison, the chief executive of Radio Centre, the trade body which acts for more than 90% of all radio stations, has been involved in early meetings with the BBC and welcomes the development. He also downplayed competition concerns, saying that the plan was for a standard that would not be closed to small players, unlike the Kangaroo project recently rejected by competition authorities. “The concept for this is entirely open access and will showcase all UK radio,” he commented.

There is a new release of the Orb Networks OrbLive app for Apple’s mobile devices iPhone and iPod Touch. Orb’s mobile application gives users access to thousands of different internet TV and radio streams.

Orb spokesman Joe Costello commented:- “Everyone who buys an iPhone wants a kick-ass media experience while they are on the go. Unfortunately, most of the media vendors have been unable to extend their applications to the Apple mobile platform,”

It is the first software app to show streaming video’s on the hottest mobile phone on the planet. It also records video on the iPhone, a feature that Apple doesn’t offer by default.He also said that over 200,000 customers downloaded the OrbLive TV app for Apple’s iPhone device.

Costello also said:- “Orb just delivered the 4th real release of OrbLive, and today it is enjoyed by over 200,000 customers who have been actually enjoying live TV on the iPhone,”

The software is also able to record the internet TV shows and radio streams and also has a text search option to find other content. You can also use a zoom function on recordings and watch in landscape screen mode as well.

Not surprisingly, OrbLive is one of the hottest downloads from the Apple store giving users live TV contentand music for the wonder devices.
