The channels promise regular new content as opposed to the same video forever looping. The channels come as YouTube competes with broadcasting companies and traditional TV by offering premium, original content on the Google owned website.

Google will be launching over 100 new channels during the next few months, said to be costing them in the region of $100 million. Already launched is the Reuters news channel. The channels will offer new and exclusive content on a regular basis and Google hope they will get mass appeal and drive advertising dollars to the web.

Lilyhammer, was it a success? We may never know

He said in a statement, “Some members have loved the show so much that they’ve already watched the entire eight-episode first season; we put all the episodes up at once for that reason.”

So unlike traditional TV, there is no way to tell how many people have watched the show due to the non-linear nature of streaming. As viewers can dip in and out of the show, watch anytime they want  or even view the whole season in one sitting, how do you give accurate ratings?

Ted continued, “We have over 23 million streaming members and they’ll have the opportunity to discover Lilyhammer not just yesterday, today or this week, but over the course of several years,” Sarandos said.

The show which has had all eight episodes made available stars Steven Van Zandt as mobster Frank “the fixer”, who as part of the witness protection plan ends up in Lillehammer, Norway.

The show marks the start of a number of original streaming shows that Netflix are set to launch during 2012. Coming soon is a revival of Emmy award winning comedy, “Arrested Development” and also the eagerly awaited David Fincher poliitical drama, “House of Cards” starring Kevin Spacey.

It was about 10 years ago when bittorrent website owners seemed to be unstoppable, but The Pirate Bay owners were caught. And after years of court hearings, it was decided that The Pirate Bay owners will remain in prison. As a result, The Pirate Bay moved its domain to .se in order to avoid being shut down by the United States authorities.

Despite that some bittorrent website owners are quick to respond to DMCA complaints and in a positive manner, they should not consider these actions as keeping them safe because the powers that be in the US seem to be on a crusade, and are still able to arrest and put a file suit against possible pirate perpetrators.

Not all website owners are doing the same including Gary Fung, IsoHunt’s owner, who said that “such things aren’t new to him.” said that “IsoHunt has been in lawsuits for about 6 years with both the CRIA and the MPAA.” Mr. Fung said that IsoHunt will continue to exist, and that the authorities cannot put the torrent website under criminal investigation because it’s already involved in two civil lawsuits.”

Bittorrent index websites “come and go,” said Fung, who said that “the entertainment industry should start embracing new technology rather than fighting against it” because it could make more money this way.

Another admin who is looking to keep his website running is Sam. After BTjunkie closed down its services, Extratorrent has become the fifth largest website of its kind. Sam believes that “it’s impossible to stop the unstoppable,” and now that Megaupload and BTjunkie are gone, “100 new websites will open,” while Extratorrent will remain online.

Like we said, The Pirate Bay will also continue to do business in Sweden using a Swedish domain, and it’s going to replace its torrent links with magnet links. So the jury seems to be out about the question, “is piracy stoppable or unstoppable?”

BBC iPlayer could be improved say BBC

The service could provide a superior streaming service using targeted rolling content said John Tate, BBC director of policy and strategy.

Speaking at a recent Westminster Media Forum,  he said, “The service is not currently taking full advantage of usage data to provide a more tailored experience. Currently, watching to the end of a show on iPlayer simply brings up a prompt to replay the content, as opposed to broadcast TV, where programmes are followed directly by new shows that are appropriate to the audience and timeslot.”

Mr Tate further added “This is one way in which video-on-demand (VoD) is still “playing catch-up” to regular TV, suggesting the introduction of targeted rolling options on iPlayer could offer various benefits. Why should you have to click play when you go to an online or VoD experience? Why shouldn’t there be some continuity or rolling element to that too?”

The BBC iPlayer set a new record of almost two billion requests for programmes during 2011 and enjoyed record viewing figures in December 11.  The iPlayer service is also set to debut on the Sky Anytime+ satellite service.

Can EyeIO answer Netflix bandwidth problems?

In a bid to resolve this issue, Netflix who are the biggest pay streaming company in the world, have teamed up with video encoding company, EyeIO to try and solve the bandwidth meltdown. The company use their expertise to reduce the bandwidth of streaming.

EyeIO co-founder, Rodolfo Vargas said, ”eyeIO provides a straightforward solution for accommodating the rapidly growing demand for video delivery around the world by alleviating the overwhelming bandwidth currently required to stream video.”

Speaking for Netflix, Greg Peters, Vice President, Product Development said, ”Delivering a high quality video experience is top priority for Netflix. EyeIO technology is an important part of the technology we use to improve video quality and overcome bandwidth challenges presented by Internet infrastructure.”

The eyeIO video encoding details are not fully known, but the method of encoding is said to be fully compliant to stream on all devices without custom players.

The only problem with this story and any kind of compression, is that it will result in a loss of quality. There is no way to transfer all that HD quality imagery without the size. Using lower bandwidth mwill result in lower video quality, unless EyeIO know something we dont?

The website which has become a major online news network in it’s own right and currently has UK, Canadian and French editions, wants to enter the live streaming video space, and plan on offering around 12 hours of content and original programming daily.

The HuffPost Streaming Network was announced in a blog post and will mix news with social media and be available, “live on every platform, computer, smartphone, tablet, Over-the-Top TV – with the goal of creating the most social video experience anywhere.”

The Huffington Post launched in 2006 and was brought by AOL in 2011 for a reported $315 million. Huffington have said that during the last year, monthly visitors to the website have grown by 47% to 36.2 million. Plannedf versions for Spanish and Italian versions are also in the works.

Huffington said about the new network, that, “People aren’t interested in being talked at anymore — they want to be part of the conversation.”

The announcement comes shortly after Reuters launched a Youtube news channel.

Sky IPTV service due before July

The new streaming station will contain a collection of Sky’s existing popular channels that can be streamed to a selection of devices.

Chennels that will make the move should include popular movies and sports channels. Sky’s move will have been motivated by the arrival of US movie streamer Netflix to the UK and the price and content fight with local rival the Amazon-owned Lovefilm.

Both those streaming services are limited in the range of material they offer to viewers. Sky is fortunate that it has plenty of content and since it already has the rights to stream much of that material to its customers, it’s in a good position to extend those rights deals to pay-as-you-view customers that are not subscribers.

Costs and other financial drtails are still unclear. Sky already streams much of its content available to satellite subscribers using the Sky Go service.

Later this year BBC’s iPlayer will become accessible to Sky customers on their home TV sets. Using BBC’s iPlayer, viewers can catch-up on BBC programmes in the familiar iPlayer experience that they may have missed.

To access the BBC catch-up TV service, users will need a broadband connection and access to the AnyTime Plus internet TV service. Viewers will also be able to use the ITV vod service, ITV Player from today.

The BBC’s goal is to reach all viewers it can, so with Sky’s plan to bring its Anytime+ to customers regardless of who their internet provider is, is a major development in helping to bring BBC iPlayer to around 5 million new homes in 2012 and at no extra charge.

This deal builds on seeing the BBC’s iPlayer on platforms like Virgin Media, BT Vision, FreeSat, Freeview, PlayStation, Wii, along with mobile phones, tablets, and Internet connected TV’s. Launching on Sky Anytime+ rounds off the picture in which BBC’s iPlayer is available on pretty much all major UK TV platforms.

The BBC Director General Mark Thompson said “Having the BBC and Sky work together to further build on the BBC iPlayer success story can only be fantastic news for audiences. Making BBC iPlayer available on all platforms is key to our commitment to universal access and this agreement takes us one step further towards that goal. I’m delighted to take this first step on a story of innovation for both organisations.”

Sky’s Chief Executive Jeremy Darroch, added “Sky Anytime+ will go from strength to strength in 2012 and we are delighted that the addition of BBC iPlayer will allow Sky customers to enjoy the best of the BBC whenever they want.”

The Fashion Fund original content on Hulu

It follows 10 designers, which were wittled down from 200 by the Council of Fashion Designers of America. They then compete design challenges and fashion tasks in a bid to win the top $300,000 prize.

The streaming series was shown exclusively on the Hulu and Hulu Plus online website yesterday, and the show continues with a new episodes every Thursday until Feb 29.

The news comes soon after Hulu announced the political show Battleground, was coming to the streaming screen. The show from director & writer, Richard Linklater following a political campaign in Wisconsin.

4 billion views daily with help from smart TVs

An impressive increase in the space of a mere eight months and a sure sign that video is being consumed more and more on mobile devices and connected smart TV sets. Decembers Comscore video rankings showed that Youtube blew away the competition with over 157 million viewers watching close to 22 billion videos.

In a report by Reuters, Youtube say the increase in video watching is simply due to the service being available on more devices such as mobile phones, tablets and web-connected televisions. A YouTube app is part of most Web-connected media players, set-top boxes, Blu-ray players and games consoles.

Add to this fact that Youtube are also adding better quality and long form content, and they should be happy bunnies? But it seems all is not so rosy as advertising revenue still dissapoints.

Possibly due to the user generated naffness of most Youtube video, the company say that less than 11% of videos viewed each week (approx 3 billion) are generating any ad revenue. Youtube make around $5 billion per year in advertising revenue.

As good quality content generates the revenue, it may explain the launch of YouTube’s third-party branded content channels last year.

Other facts released by the video giant include, users upload 60 hours of video every minute and every second  users are uploading an hour of video. To celebrate that fact, YouTube have a dedicated website called onehourpersecond.com that shows viewers an hour per second of video in visual form.

Megavideo shut down

Megaupload and sister site Megavideo were infamous file-sharing and video websites that let users share and watch files, many of them illegal, and many of them movies and TV shows. The sites were shut down by a US government department.

It is reported that the Fed have taken into custody seven individuals, who they say are part of a, “Mega Conspiracy, a worldwide criminal organization whose members engaged in criminal copyright infringement and money laundering on a massive scale”. If convicted, the defendants will face up to 20 years in jail and fined up to $175 million.

The shutdown of the high-profile sharing sites could be in direct response to the mass online protests against the planned PIPA and SOPA anti-piracy bills being debated in the US Congress. The Megaupload site was run by a man called Kim Dotcom and six other individuals.

The FBI said of the takedown, “The estimated harm caused by the conspiracy’s criminal conduct to copyright holders is well in excess of $500 million. The conspirators allegedly earned more than $175 million in illegal profits through advertising revenue and selling premium memberships.”

This is huge news as megaupload was easily one the biggest file-sharing websites on the Internet. Although there re still plenty of others such as Rapidshare etc., the owners of those sites will not be sleeping well, we would imagine.

The site takedown notice comes just after massive website protests against the two piracy bills that are being debated by Congress. Although the acts are supposed to help in the fight against piracy and content theft, many think the powers are too great. Websites such as Google, Facebook and Wikipedia have protested (some with 24hr blackouts) that the internet should remain free and largely uncensored.

Even if the acts are not passed, the shutting down of high a high profile video sharing site shows the intentions of the US Government for the coming year.

Reuters TV comes online

The news agency are part of YouTube’s new 100 channel partners announced last November, and will also be streaming content on their own Reuters.com website as well.

Reuters say that the online version of the news agency will make use of high quality production values and an editing style, “suited for internet programming and does not mimic traditional TV.”

LoveFilm get ABC show streaming rights

The streaming del will allow LoveFilm to show full seasons on-demand after they have aired on TV, and back seasons of some shows will be made available on LoveFilm Instant as well.

Speaking for LoveFilm, CEO Simon Calver said, “Today’s deal with Disney brings (LoveFilm subscribers) access to some of the best American TV content ever produced.”

For the Walt Disney Company, Catherine Powell, senior vice president said, “ABC TV On Demand is home to high quality, compelling US drama, produced by ABC Studios, and launching this service with LOVEFiLM means we are able to offer viewers more choice and flexibility in how and when they can view full seasons of these gripping shows, through one easy-to-use service.”

LoveFilm boasts 2 million subscribers across Europe and offers a streaming-only subscription service for £4.99 monthly (approx $7.50) for web-enabled devices such as PC, PS3, Xbox 360, iPad, Blu-ray players and connected TV sets.

They are currently locked in a content battle with Netflix, who this month launched a streaming service in the UK and Ireland for £5.99 (approx $9.17) monthly. Netflix have struck deals with the BBC, Miramax, ITV, Channel 4, Disney, Lionsgate and Momentum Pictures whilst Lovefilm has deals with Sony Pictures, Warner Bros., BBC Worldwide and ITV, eOne and Studiocanal.

Battleground original streaming content from Hulu

The show, which is a comedy in the mould of ‘The Office’, follows a political campaign set in Wisconsin. It will be a mock-documentary and follows what goes on behind the scenes as a camera crew film it all. It stars a cast of unknown actors and will premiere on February 14 and new episodes will stream every Tuesday.

Hulu also announced travel show ‘Up to Speed’, which debuts in the summer and takes a look at historic and forgotten places around the US. And launching in March will be the second season of Morgan Spurlock’s ‘A Day in the Life’ on a ten episode run.

Hulu are currently locked in battle with Netflix, who are creating original programming of their own. They are launching a new series of the award winning show, Arrested Development, original series Lilyhammer and political drama House of Cards, starring Kevin Spacey.

The BBC’s iPlayer catch-up TV service has enjoyed it’s biggest ever audience figures in December (up 29% from 2010), with the huge jump in requests from not from computers, but connected devices such as connected TV sets, tablets and smartphones.

Top Gear and connected devices helped iplayer have a record year

The BBC have revealed that for the month of December, they received 187 million views from all platforms. But the big change was from which devices. 7 million requests from connected TV sets. An astonishing 1000% increse from December 2010. Tablets, including iPad had a 596% increase with 10 million requests and smartphones got an increase of 163% with 13 million programmes requested.

In total the iPlayer had 1.94 billion requests during the year 2011, showing that both online TV and internet-connected devices are making a real dent in the market. BBC general manager for programmes and on-demand, Daniel Danker said, “While 2011 was a remarkable year for BBC iPlayer across the board, the real story was growth of iPlayer on TVs, mobile phones, and tablets, outpacing PC growth many times over.”

Youtube's Robert Kyncl sees TV moving online

Kyncl, who was previously employed by Netflix and saw the company evolve from DVD rentals to streaming, predicted that by 2020, 75% of all TV programming will be transmitted or streamed via the web. He also said that in a few years, watching streaming video will account for 90% of all online traffic.

Of course, Kyncl has an agenda, and that is to push Youtube as the future of TV, and he did a pretty good job. Youtube received around a trillion hits during 2011 and expect additional growth in 2012. They are investing $100 million in original content designed to change peoples perception of the video website.

Kyncl who said the web was the biggest development in TV since the introduction of cable, said that internet video consumption has the potential to draw an audience that standard TV can only dream of. And of course Google plan to be a major part of this new era.

Endgame comes to Hulu

The crime drama was originally aired on Canadian TV channel Showcase in March 2011, and the Hulu streaming will mark its debut in the US showing on both Hulu and the subscription based Hulu Plus.

The show stars Shawn Doyle who starred in 24 and Desperate Housewives. He plays a Russian chess master who witnesses the murder of his fiancee and is confined to his hotel.

The show has completed one full season of 13 episodes but was then cancelled by Showcase. After improved ratings, award nominations and calls for it’s return, the show may just come back.

No details of financial terms have been disclosed but viewers can catch the show right now on Hulu.

Netflix UK Imminent?

Netflix announced the Britain and Ireland launch last October and have been negotiating content deals ever since. The company dominate streaming in the US, Canada and Latin America already and have over 20 million subscribers around the world. Last week Netflix reportedvealed that viewers had watched over 2 billion hours of content in the last 3 months of 2011.

PS3 owners have noticed the familiar Netflix logo appearing amongst the other apps although the online service is not yet live. The app currently lets users register for updates. The Netflix service will cost £5.99 monthly for unlimited streaming of TV shows and movies, which is a similar price point to Lovefilm who will be their biggest rival.

So if you have a connected TV set, Blu-Ray player or other connected device, keep checking for the imminent Netflix app.

Lovefilm get to stream BBC and ITV content

LoveFilm owned by Amazon are the leading UK streaming company, who will shortly face some stiff competition from rival Netflix who plan to launch in the UK. The two companies have been busy securing content deals as the market becomes more competative. Netflix have already secured a deal with the BBC back in December.

Speaking about the deal, Simon Calver, CEO of LoveFilm said, “We are thrilled to be bringing together great British TV content with Europe’s leading film subscription service. This gives LOVEFiLM an even more powerful, unique offering of instant programming for our members to view across a growing number of platforms, for one low monthly price.”

For BBC Worldwide, Lisa Rousseau, Head of UK and Irelan said, “We’ve had a content partnership with LOVEFiLM for several years now and it’s great to see this evolve digitally. We’re delighted to give LOVEFiLM’s subscribers the opportunity to instantly watch their favourite British shows, wherever and whenever they wish, alongside a diverse range of great programmes and films.”

LoveFilm were acquired by Amazon back in February 2011 and boast around 1.9m members in the UK, Germany, Sweden, Denmark and Norway. The Lovefilm Instant service allows subscribers to watch streaming on a number of devices such their computer, PS3, Xbox 360, Apple iPad and connected TV sets. They also offer members the option of a DVD by mail service, which Netflix UK, has abandoned.

The deal from the two TV networks is both non-exclusive and only applies to older content as both the BBC and ITV keep the premium and current content for their own catch-up players, the iPlayer and ITV Player.

Netflix streaming surpasses expectations

Reed Hastings the Netflix Chief Executive Officer had estimated fourth-quarter streaming would be “well over” 1 billion hours. And analyst for BTIG LLC, Rich Greenfield had figured 1.2 billion hours would be watched in the last three months of 2011.

2012 is expected to be a losing year for Netflix though as Hastings has said that they expect losses in 2012 due to launch costs of the streaming service which is coming to the UK and Ireland.

Netflix could be a good aquisition for Yahoo says Piper Jaffray analyst,  Gene Munster. Speaking to CNBC on Wednesday, he said that it could, “make a lot of sense” if Yahoo were to buy the streaming and DVD rental company.

Although it was nowhere near an official announcement, the news sent shares of Netflix up by 11.4% on the same day.

Lilyhammer the first of Netflix original streaming content

Lilyhammer, which stars Steven Van Zandt as a mobster Frank “The Fixer” Tagliano, who enters the witness protection plan in a bid to make a new life for himself  in Lillehammer, Norway.

Steven Van Zandt who was formerly a guitarist for Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band reprises a role familiar to fans of the Sopranos which he also starred in. The comedy drama is part of the Netflix original online content drive, designed to bring more viewers online and reduce the high cost and complications of buying high quality content.

The show will be available to stream in the US, Canada and in Latin America on Feb. 6, interestingly all episodes will become available at once giving viewers the chance to watch the whole series in one go.

Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix said in a statement, “If you love the first episode, there is no need to wait until next week, or to set a DVR, to catch the next on.”

The show is the first streamed of many that Netflix have exclusive rights to. The company have a reputation for showing only old shows and movies that have been discontinued or past their ‘sell by date’.

It is a good move by Netflix as over 60% of streamed content watched on Netflix comprises TV shows, and still to come this year is the Kevin Spacey political drama House of Cards, and Netflix have the rights to the renewed episodes of comedy show Arrested Development as well.

Online TV in the UK on a plateau?

The study was carried out by the Barb, who measure the UK’s broadcasting audience. The study comprised of 4,000 viewers who were asked if they had watched UK online TV content on a computer, laptop or tablet during the previous week.

The result back in December 2010, of the same survey had a yes percentage of 14.4%. The results for 2011 were 14.9%, a rise of just 0.5%. When compared with the same results in 2009 (which was 11.2%), the growth has shown a massive slowdown.

In a statement Barb said that the “plateau” effect can be attributed to the growing popularity of connected set-top boxes and Internet-connected TV sets that both carry catch-up content

One area of online viewing still on the rise is smartphones which have doubled amongst the 15-34 age demographic. The figure for 2011 of 9.8% compared to the 2010 figure of 5.8%.

The figures are a little misleading though, although the week comparison between years showed little growth, the actual increase of all adults watching TV on PC, laptop or tablet device was 36.2% for 2011, showing an increase from the 2010 figure of 5.1%.

FilmOn AIR service coming in Feb 2012

The firm announced today that FilmOn AIR dongle will be shipped free to all its subscribers of their virtual cable network, so they can watch local network television and record content, a kind of mobile online TiVo.

Subscribers pay $149.95 yearly for the lowest streaming package and the FilmOn AIR system will cost $95.95. The existing app streams 120 online channels.

But looking at their website or app that let viewers watch channels such as NASA HD, Al Jazeera, TBN, and a selection of sports channels. you may struggle to find any well known broadcasters such as ABC, CBS, Fox or NBC. The US networks are not too happy with FilmOn rebroadcasting their content.

FilmOn are currently in mid legal battle with the American networks and are fighting the rebroadcasting restrictions placed on them.

The AIR tuner device would be a legal workaround and allow over-the-air broadcasts to be viewed and recorder on iOS and Android, as well as Windows and OS X.

Speaking about FilmOn AIR, founder and CEO, Alki David, said in a press release, “In 2010, FilmOn ended up in an ongoing legal battle with all four of the major networks CBS, NBC, ABC and FOX, over FilmOn’s right to carry their signals over the Internet. The case is ongoing and FilmOn expects to settle the dispute this year,”

He continued, “FilmOn has licensed over 120 HD online television channels and has even launched its own College Sports and Live Soccer Channels, but the challenge has been in legally bringing major network programming to our line-up whilst respecting the networks’ traditional business models.”

Having began on 22 December, YouTube decided to allow its video overlay (for most videos) to take on a ‘winter theme’, with the red circular video progress sign given a slight tweak in order to look like a snowflake, while a button at the bottom of the video screen allows a user to toggle a simulated snowfall over the top of the clip (and ‘builds up’ at the foot of the page), with both features currently available on both the YouTube site, and external embeds of videos.

Another element of YouTube’s ‘winterface’ is the use of the mouse icon as a ‘wind’ effect, with the snowflakes responding to the mouse being on the video screen, in an interactive add-on similar to YouTube’s keyboard-activated integration of popular video game Snake in 2010. It is the not the first new feature from December either, though, as new ‘video contest’ YouTube Slam was launched earlier that month.

The snow feature has also dispelled rumours that it could have been a Christmas-only option by remaining online through to today, leaving the possibility open for a button that lasts all winter. Will virtual snow go down as a popular add-on from YouTube?
