iPlayer app on iPad reviews

Of course the great thing about apps is that they can auto update so improvments can come at any time. The big questions and requests are how about an international version for a start and an option to download shows to watch later and offline? This would be the holy grail for BBC lovers, making the BBC truly portable for the first time.

The first question about the BBC iPlayer app is why build one at all when the iPad has long been able to access the iPlayer on the web. The answer is that the app can provide a better user interface and a more stable experience than a browser. Apps can use APIs that the browser can’t and an app can manage memory use better than the browser.

You can’t share links to programmes. Very, very annoying. One of the best featurettes of the iPlayer is being able to share a link to an exact moment in a programme. Not a jot of it on the iPad. You are well and truly walled off.The quality of streaming live TV seems a little inconsistent, compared with on-demand shows. Watching live appears more prone to buffering than catching up.

The iPad app doesn’t have the nice feature – used on the Apple-friendly web version – which tells you what time your programme will finish.

The iPlayer iPad app itself is a masterpiece in simplicity. The content sits at the forefront at all times and the albeit slick-as-you-like interface sits very much under the surface. The on-demand offering is exactly the same as you’ll find elsewhere, with TV shows available to stream for seven days after they were originally broadcast. There is no download option.

For the moment, the iPad’s iPlayer app is available only in the UK. A subscription-based app for the US App Store is on the way, but for us righteous, licence-paying Brits, the app is free to download and to use.

Your TV will be internet driven in 2011

2010 has been a big year, in fact the biggest yet for internet tv. Amongst all the launches, new developments and other shenanigans, the year has ended with some winners and some losers. Many that have had major blips would never have been predicted in a million years, yes i am talking about you Google TV. On the flip side, some companies getting a stronger foothold were surprising too, for example the Roku set-top box.

So to see where we are heading in 2011, we need a recap of 2010. The year was dominated by hardware that let viewers access online content on the big screen tv. The reasoning being that most viewers do not want complicated computers and loading software to watch tv, they want to press a button on the remote and watch tv shows and movies on demand.

Winners in 2010

One of the biggest players in internet tv hardware were led by Steve Jobs with the revamped Apple TV product. With a low $99 pricepoint and access to the massive iTunes library guaranteeing it’s success. The downside is of course that users are stuck with iTunes and the closed architecture means no other companies can get in unless approved by Apple. This domination puts many people off, but also would endear Apple to content providers.

Internet connected television Most big name tv manufacturers launched television sets that were internet connected from the box. Allowing viewers to access web content on the big screen tv. Services such as Youtube, Netflix and social networking were on offer from Sony, Samsung amongst others.

Other set top box creators are booming with hardware that basically adds Netflix, Amazon and other services straight to the tv set. Roku, have seen a doubling of sales this year, and D-link with their Boxee, launched a revamped product that was cheaper than Google TV and available Internationally.

Clampdown on online Piracy

Many websites were shut down in 2010 in a rash of takedowns by the Government. Many sites that are re-broadcasting content are in the middle of legal battles with the tv networks. Amongst them are FilmOn, Ivi TV and TVCatchup. All these companies are pleading innocence, but will they be able to win a battle with the tv companies?

Tablet Computers and Mobile Devices

Tablets really took off in 2010. dominated by Apple’s iPad. Many copycat tablets are being released including probably best of the bunch, the Samsung Tab which is a real rival to iPad running off the Android OS. It has been commented by many that the iPad was built for watching TV and it’s owners more likely to cut the cord.

TV On Demand

Netflix has had a great year, wrapping up new content deals on a regular basis, Hulu has had a tougher time and been criticised for their subscription service. But they are now making money and have a great online platform.

Losers in 2010

Google promised to seamlessly marry the tv with a web browser, but a high price point and negative reviews were followed by the TV networks blocking online tv streaming to the Google enabled TV set. It has got to the point where Google are asking manufacturers to hold off releasing Google TV hardware until it updates the software.

Yahoo were one of the earliest adopters of the internet tv concept but seemed to lose their way with the Yahoo! widget concept. The idea of tv sets running Yahoo software has been superceeded by the apps setup on most connected tv’s. Howeverhere are over 70 models that support it from makers such as Samsung, Sony, LG, Vizio and Toshiba. They recently agreed a deal with Europes largest TV manufacturer Vestel, to distribute Yahoo powered tv sets into Europe.

Meanwhile, Netflix has been gathering up its own hoard of TV content to continue and expand its offering. It’s run into some roadblocks from certain Hollywood studios, but is still seeing more success than stumbling.

Internet TV the future

Online tv streaming is firmly established and will continue to grow, albeit behind paywalls and possibly hardware restricted (If Apple gets their way). Apple TV will continue to grow its user base, already this year they managed to shift one million Apple TV boxes.

Viewers time will increasingly be taken up by online activities. Netflix and Hulu will continue to ‘slug it out’ and one will end up on top.

Google will get their Google TV act together and with updated software will probably tie up deals with tv networks allowing for pay tv streaming on the system. They will also roll out the hardware on the International stage. There will also be lots more Android powered devices all capable of streaming tv and movies.

The TV Networks will finally sort out an online strategy. Currently blocking any streaming to the big screen, they will

Expect to see lots more tv on lots more devices, and expect to see shows when you want. Expect to discuss what your watching with friends and the worldwide community via social networking. Expect to be able to call up any details about the show or movie your watching in a seamless experience of tv watching and web browsing. Expect internet and the tv to finally merge as one in 2011.

Google TV gets an update

Google TV owners get ready for what us pc users are familiar with, but tv users are not. A software update. Google have been sending out the 1.2 update over the last day or so to anyone with a connected tv or Blu-ray player.

So what changes and new features will we see? Improved movie searching is one, so when searching you get links to watch the movie on live TV or on demand from either Amazon or Netflix. Plus you can see plot summaries, cast info and phots. And a little like searching IMDB, you can click on an actor or actress and get a list of everything they have starred in, and even a bio of said person.

A great feature of Google TV is the Dual View mode, allowing viewers to see the tv show and browse the web on the same screen The new update lets users move and resize the second screen.

Customers of Netflix will find it easier to search and view streaming and change their DVD queue. They will also have access to a new recommendations section showing a list of movie choices you may be interested in.

TV Remote app. The Google TV remote is not just a remote, they have launched a new app that turns your phone into a smart tv remote. you can use it to control your TV using your voice and share videos and websites from phone to TV.

Updates are happening automatically over the next week or so. If nothing else, it will cheer up users from the increasingly depressing news coming out these days.

The move does not come as a surprise, BT offers similar promotions via its existing internet TV service, BT Vision. In addition, the operator has already revealed that current Vision customers can expect an upgrade to support the new YouView technology.

The Director of BT Vision, Andy Baker said: “When YouView launches in the first half of next year, BT will offer the service to consumers via a variety of packages. YouView may be offered at special rates as part of new or improved broadband packages.”

BT has admitted that its current BT Vision service has not exactly lived up to their expectations. Some early predictions were known to target 1-2 Million customers, yet to date they have only managed to secure a not unrespectable total of 520,000.

TV remains a very difficult field to win, not least due to its dominance by Sky TV, Virgin Media UK and the lack of an adequate broadband infrastructure that support IPTV with viable streaming. BT probably has not helped its position in this market by considering a plan to sell ad space on its service, which will risk making it even less attractive to consumers.

However the situation is improving and BT will soon leverage its new “Fibre” based FTTC up to 40Mbps and FTTH/P up to 110Mbps services to support YouView, despite its poor coverage 40% of UK premises by 2012. The operator has also developed a new Content Delivery Network CDN to assist both itself and other ISPs in adopting the service.

TalkTalk has made no secret about its own ambition to launch a YouView service next year and, like BT, it is also constructing a CDN of its own.

As it stands, YouView remains in untested grounds in the commercial world and consumers will ultimately be the ones to decide whether the service is worth having or not. There is a definite demand for an alternative to Sky’s costly Satellite TV and Virgin’s Cable offerings, although beating those two is no easy task.

It’s worth pointing out that one of the reasons for BT and TalkTalk’s noted opposition to Net Neutrality the principal of treating all internet traffic as equal is because it risks impeding their ability to sign unique content deals for new broadband based TV content. Of course going the TV route means seeing the likes of YouTube as a competitor and TalkTalk would love to charge Google for that.

Lava, the small private manufacturer based on the Swedish coast, launched the new TV named Scandinavia in Swedish stores. The company hopes by next year to sell the set in major overseas market like the US. as well.

Internet connected TV has been around for quite a while now from big manufacturers like Samsung and Philips, but these devices tend to offer “walled gardens with widgets for predetermined online content like YouTube or certain news sites rather than the free browsing and downloading possibilities of a laptop or smartphone”, Lava’s Chief Executive Christian Svantesson said in an interview.

But this Android TV, which has been in the making since Lava’s management team thought of the idea last summer, is set to change things.

With the exception of voice calls, the “Scandinavia” on display in the company’s Stockholm sales office allows me to do pretty much anything I would expect in a mobile smartphone. The set has a home menu with widgets including Google’s Chrome web browser, Facebook, YouTube and Google Maps. It also has its own application store where users can download additional content.

There are only 20 or so apps in the dedicated store at the moment, but there will be more than 1,000 before year-end as it will be able to import many of the apps in the online Android Market store as long as they are scalable to fit a TV screen rather than a handset, according to People of Lava’s marketing director Martin Ljunggren.

The TV, which runs the rather dated Android version 1.5, known as cupcake, comes with a remote control with a built-in keyboard. The company plans an app to control it with an Android phone, says Mr. Ljunggren.

Apart from the smartphone functionality, Scandinavia is a pretty nice TV in its own right. The one on display is a 55-inch flatscreen built with a composite including a lot of bauxite rock, which makes it surprisingly heavy at around 40 kilograms (88 pounds).

The hardware design is clean, in white, black and grey, and the screen responds quickly. It’s priced towards the high end, at 40,000 Swedish kronor $5,833 or €4,257 for the 55-inch model.

Though Lava only has around 20 employees, it has its own assembly line on the Swedish west coast with externally-contracted workers, which can produce up to 50,000 TV sets per year, says Mr. Svantesson. The company hopes to sell 200 million kronor worth of Scandinavia TVs in 2011, and aims to win a niche in markets like the U.S. and the U.K., where there has been significant consumer interest in the new Android TV.

Still, says Mr. Svantesson, financing of the planned expansion remains a hurdle. Lava needs €10 million to launch the TV in major markets like the U.S. The company hopes soon to raise the sum from an industrial investor or venture capitalist.

If Lava gets the money for a U.S. launch, the company will be up against consumer electronics giant Sony Corp which is just rolling out its own Android-based TV, building on a different solution that intermingles TV broadcasts and Internet content rather than running them side by side.

Google’s own TV launched recently in the US but unlike the Scandinavia, it is a more-conventional set-top box for an existing TV set.

As yet another part of the consumer electronics industry gravitates into the world of cloud services, open source platforms and application stores, new business opportunities will arise for the players in the sector.

Including not only TV manufacturers and app developers but also content providers and telecom operators who might for instance want to bundle their subscriptions with free TV sets in order to increase customer loyalty, Mr. Svantesson says. Whatever happens, it going to happen soon, he added. “Within five years, smart TV will be a mainstream household product.“

“If I can watch Glee tomorrow morning and I don’t have to pay a pay TV service –- I think that’s bad,” Eisen said, the Hulu way is to let viewers watch content as soon as they want, there needs to be 30-day wait after a new show airs on tv. “If people decide that they don’t have to pay for pay TV, then one of the pillars (of the TV industry) starts crumbling,” he continued.

The results of a survey carried out by Altman Vilandrie & Company show that viewers are ditching pay TV subscriptions. The survey shows that 3.9% of people aged 25-34 have dropped their subscriptions,  and 20% were looking at doing the same due to online streaming.

It is no surprise that the big pay tv broadcasters both cable and satellite are ‘wetting themselves’ now that the tv arena is becoming more competative and in some cases free. But should they be allowed to change the rules to suit themselves?

YouView aims to upgrade the Freeview and Freesat platforms to support VOD and internet services, has appointed Adam & Eve as its advertising agency.

Adam & Eve will handle through-the-line advertising and communications as the YouView partners the BBC, ITV, BT, Channel 4, TalkTalk, Arqiva and Channel 5 all attempt to persuade consumers that they can “change the way you watch TV forever”.

YouView, which is run by chief executive Richard Halton and chairman Kip Meek, has also hired OMD as its main planning and buying agency, while Momentum will provide specialist retail and experiential marketing.

The three agencies will be tasked with steering the brands launch and the rollout of YouView across all media and channels by half way through 2011.

“We believe YouView will transform the way people watch TV forever and have assembled a highly talented agency team to help deliver this,” said YouView’s marketing director Tim Hunt.

“Adam & Eve is one of the most creative and dynamic new agencies in the UK and we are hugely excited about its plans for YouView.”

He added: “Similarly, Momentum and OMD have demonstrated real leadership in the sector and have a track record of delivering high impact campaigns.

“With the right people in place, the hard work starts now – we are all now focused on bringing YouView to life for viewers.”

According to the financial data gathered last year, YouView – which was previously known as Project Canvas will have a £48 million marketing budget at hand in its first four years of opperation.

Twelve companies including both Virgin Media and BSkyB submitted objections about the YouView project to Ofcom, but the communications regulator gave the green light so that the project can proceed, saying potential harm to competition would be offset against the benefits to viewers.

Rose said in a statement:- “I think the top two more important misconceptions about YouView are: No 1, it’s a cartel, and No 2, it’s the BBC. Neither of those are true,” Rose said.

“There are seven shareholders, clearly they are all contributing their money for some purpose; but to me, it’s a little bit like the [movie] Usual Suspects. There’s a body somewhere, police have arrested eight people, they’ve all done something in the past but they are probably not directly connected with this.”

“When you see the way the user experience team and the technologists work to solve very basic problems it becomes very clear that it’s nothing to do with these cartel aspersions.” Rose was also quick to clarify the point that YouView is constructed of BBC staff. Only a “small fraction” of people at YouView are from the BBC, he said.

“It was started by the BBC some years ago as an idea but actually there are about 10 people from BBC R&D who are now seconded to YouView, the rest of the team are YouView employees. The entire proposition is by no means a BBC proposition,” Rose also said.

Rose joined YouView which was formerly known as Project Canvas on 1st May after a spell revamping the BBC iPlayer during his tenure as controller of vision and online media department. YouView remains on track to launch in the first half of next year, targeting the 7m Freeview households that have broadband access. YouView-enabled television sets are “unlikely” to be available by next year, Rose said, but a 2012 range was more likely.

Speaking at The Future of Digital Media Distribution conference in London, Rose confirmed that the video-on-demand platform will be open “in the sense that anyone can create content for the platform”, but that there would be a regulatory process.

“If you look at the app store models – on the one hand there’s the Apple one and there’s the Google Android one. Where do we intend to play in that spectrum? What we say is the equivalent of an MOT,” he said. “We don’t seek to have any editorial input on what’s good or bad, we set some baseline conditions.”

Asked how open he would describe platform, in relation to the aforementioned policies of Apple and Google, Rose said: “It’s open in the sense that anyone can create content for the platform. The question is, does it have a URL bar and can you browse the open internet?

“If you make it fully open you end up with each manufacturer having to give updates and your trusted TV starts becoming about as frivolous as your computer, and there’s nothing like watching the iPlayer on your TV set through your computer when Windows decides now is a great time to install updates.”

“The problem rights holders have with Android is that as you enable an open platform, there you are recording some content and another app can go read that and share it.”

“You have a tension between what rights holders want in order to make premium content available on the platform, and what consumers want. I’m not hearing any consumers right now saying ‘I need BitTorrent on the platform’.”

Is cable feeling the heat from the net?

Google plans to form big and effective partnerships such as with Sony this autumn for a project that will blend streams from the Internet and broadcast programming on tv screens. Hulu, the popular online video site, has revealed plans for a pay service that will delivers their broadcast shows across the Internet and through medium such as computers, TVs, the iPhone and iPad, as well as several gaming consoles. Meanwhile, Sonic Solutions of Novato have struck a deal with Sears Holdings Corp. to provide their retail customers with online rentals and downloads of movies and TV shows over an array of Internet-connected devices.

The approaches to these services will vary, but they all present genuine alternatives to what most of us have come to accept as the norm: Paying $50-plus a month to pipe in a handful of channels that we actually want – along with hundreds we don’t – in order to watch the few programs we’re interested in, largely at the time we’re told.

Such new services will allow consumers to pick from a broader array of content options, enjoy online programs through the so-called lean back experience of full-size TV screens or the portable viewing with various mobile devices, choose when they’d like to watch without the need to remember to set a recording and, particularly in the case of Google TV, take advantage of brand new interactive features.

Most of the companies that are enabling what’s known as “over the top” services stress they’re looking to augment rather than displace the offerings of cable or satellite companies. But analysts think the additional power offered to consumers will leave the legacy companies with a stark choice: progress or perish.

“The future of Internet-enhanced TV starts now,” says James McQuivey, the media technology analyst at Forrester Research. “It’s really forcing cable … to be more focused on consumer control and access across multiple devices.”

Over 800,000 US households have already scaled down cable TV subscriptions, as they now seem to rely almost exclusively on online tv services, according to an April report by the Convergence Consulting Group. The Toronto firm predicts that this figure could reach 1.6 million by the end of 2011. The Yankee Group estimates that as many as 1 in 8 consumers will unplug or downgrade their paid TV service by April, as they take advantage of the over the top options.

But cable and satellite companies aren’t sitting idly by. Time Warner Inc. and Comcast Corp. are pursuing “TV Everywhere” strategies that deliver their vast content to already paying customers over the devices of their choosing. They’re also supplementing offerings with on demand services and digital video recorders, which share similar advantages to watching online. TV networks are also attempting to break ahead in this new game, as channels like ABC and NBC deliver more content directly on their Web sites. Today, however, most of these approaches leave the broadcasters with less revenue, as they are unable to pack in too many ads. Ultimately, the companies must deliver more targeted ads, which are seen as  more lucrative, said Tim Bajarin, president of Creative Strategies. Internet TV could make this possible in ways that Nielsen ratings never could.

To date, such specific initiatives haven’t exactly upended the industry. But analysts say that Internet TV momentum is clearly building, driven by the increasing adoption and speed of broadband as well as the widening availability of these services, and some believe that Google TV could represent a watershed moment. “It’s the first one I would say that represents a brand-new model,” Bajarin added.

Notably, it’s not restricted to a particular set of services like many of the Internet TV attempts to date, instead incorporating the Internet at large. In addition, it’s based on an open platform, Google’s Android operating system. The Mountain View company hopes that this will help create an industry standard that propels adoption and innovation, said Rishi Chandra, product manager for Google TV.

Out of the box, the Google-powered Internet TVs and set-top devices will allow users to tap into the company’s highly developed search capability to find video, music and other content not just among their cable programming but across the Internet.

Meanwhile, new ‘picture-in-picture’ capabilities could enable them to, say, pull up sports statistics as they watch the Super Bowl, chat live about World Cup matches with viewers on the other side of the globe, or click to buy that ironic trucker hat Judah Friedlander is wearing on “30 Rock.”

An ’open source’ platform could also enable developers to invent tools and toys that can’t be predicted today, much as Apple’s App Store did for smart phones. Google is providing their platform for free, but anticipates making money from advertising within Google TV. It won’t take a cut from the ads in traditional programming, but will employ information gleaned from the ways consumers use the service to improve ad targeting on the interactive side.

As with behavioral advertising, this approach could cause huge controversy through people who prefer their privacy. But, like most Internet services to date, the majority of consumers will be likely to decide that such trade-offs are more than worthwhile, as McQuivey stated: “Ask the 400 million people on Facebook whether the concerns outweigh the benefits,” he said.

Kylo PC on TV but not Hulu

Kylo can be downloaded from www.kylo.tv, and is opens to a simple screen offering links to internet tv content providers including YouTube, CBS, NBC and Fox. It also has other apps allowing access to Facebook etc.

The software has been rushed out to meet demand from new HDTV and Blu-ray players are being sold with internet connectivity built in. Boxee and Roku are also manufacturing set-top boxes that allow internet access on tv, and funnily enough Boxee have had run-ins with Hulu over streaming tv shows.

After launching, there was an instant response from Hulu who disabled streaming from this new app. Hillcrest issued a statement saying:-

“We have confirmed with Hulu that they are preventing the Kylo web browser from playing Hulu videos. Prior to our formal launch, Hulu videos would play within the Kylo browser. Like Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari, the Kylo browser is simply a Web browser that enables consumers to visit any site on the Web. We have tremendous respect for Hulu, and we hope that a continued dialog might influence their thinking.” — Dan Simpkins, CEO of Hillcrest Labs

The Kylo browser which is in effect all it is, must have known Hulu would not take kindly to its streaming content on television being distributed by their browser! And to think Hulu might change their mind is laughable. But hey its great publicity right?

Now Youtube are getting into the lucrative and high demand live sports streams arena, Google and the India Premier League have announced a partnership that will allow YouTube to serve streams of Cricket’s most important annual tournament to all on the web who choose to see it.

Starting in March, sixty Cricket matches will be streamed along with an expected sponsor who will pay handsomely for the privelage, possibly helping Youtube to make a profit in 2010.

Bruce Daisley from Google UK said:- “We’re keen to see how the community will take to live sport. There’s a real interest in live events, so we’re excited.”

If successful it could lead to more prestigious events and sports being streamed on the video giant, and would further distance its reputation as a funny videos website

Cello or iViewer Streams Internet To TV

The LCD Cello also known as the iViewer will be sold at Marks and Spencer, a well known high street store for a bargain £400 ($650) for a 26-inch 720p model and £500 ($810) for a 32-inch 1080p version. Specs include Ethernet, a separate but bundled Wi-Fi dongle and dual HDMI ports.

The iViewer TV will let viewers watch on-demand tv shows to the big screen without the need for set-top boxes.

The iViewer TV will be branded as a Marks & Spencer telly, although it’s actually being manufactured in North Yorkshire by British firm Cello Electronics.

Using the TV, you can watch YouTube and iPlayer etc. plus you can stream any movies, photos and music from your computer on the network. Cello claimed at the launch party that the impressive TV can play all file formats (“if you can think of it, we support it” was the boast).

The future of internet tv is here, and i just added something to my Christmas list.

The new TV site Jaroo.com, which is your regular Hulu type site is targetted towards kids in the 4-12 year age range, and has a good selection of 22 minute long shows (mainly cartoon) supported by advertising.

The site has one of the biggest selections of free to view full-length kids tv series including Inspector Gadget, The Adventures of Paddington Bear, Johnny Test, Cake, Madeline, Ripley’s Believe It or Not and popular cartoon show Mona the Vampire.

The Ministry of Science and Technology has signed an agreement with the SARFT (State Administration of Radio, Film and Television) in China and announced to the world that it will begin building the first high capacity optic fiber network throughout the country putting Internet, TV and phone services through a single network.

The stats of the new network are a bandwidth of 1000 Gbits, comparing to the existing one of 1 Gbits. Allowing each user in the network to have a 100 Mbit per second access to the Internet than the existing 1 Mbit access.

A regional network has been built in the Yangtze River Delta and put on a trial run for one year since December, 2006, covering about 30,000 users.

“The lab tests and trial run showed the network and related softwares were stable enough for commercial operation,” said a ministry official.

However the nationwide program is still at an early stage. The agreement did not mention the timetable of construction or any cost details.

“Although the new network has a high capacity, whether it is able to provide a package service will depend on telecom companies,” the official said.

So, in a nutshell you can buy this device (selling price currently unknown) and watch internet tv streams via the built in interface straight onto your TV. Or, you can use your existing computer and connect up your PC to your TV set and do it all a hundred times easier and better. Frankly i see this as another disappointment and waste of time because it does something that nobody needs!

Still, the evolution of online TV requires that these devices come and go until we reach the utopia that is full on internet TV.

You can of course get a Settop box of sorts like TiVo, Apple TV etc will allow you to download movies to your TV, but they then erase it 24 hours later. A DVD sent in the mail is good, but you have to wait for it to arrive.
