Social TV Makes Everyone a Curator

It’s pretty clear: TV is no longer about every family sitting down to watch “Ed Sullivan” at 7pm each night.

The lines between digital media are starting to blur: TV can be accessed anywhere, on any connected TV. Additionally, the amount of available TV content has exploded with the birth of OTT, VoD, catch up, and streaming media. Social TV is the natural child of this revolution: suddenly people are consuming content in new ways.

Social TV essentially makes everyone a curator, and empowers viewers to filter and recommend TV content themselves. By voicing their opinions on Twitter and Facebook, suddenly viewers have a much bigger say in how content is curated, and what shows rise to the top.

Social TV is still a growing and important trend. Key value is created by inviting everyone – not just the experts- to curate content, generating buzz and chatter. And socially curating content is becoming an increasingly popular activity – even if consumers don’t directly know they are doing it. And as a result, people are turning to Twitter and Facebook to find out what’s hot on TV that night.

However while many viewers are actively curating content with their Tweets and status updates, does it have the desired results?

Social TV…with a caveat

However, while social is the buzz word of the moment, there is some evidence that social networks are actually starting to lose some of their holds over the hearts and minds of consumers.

Surprisingly, the typical Facebook user doesn’t even know 20% of their friends, and the authority of peers has notably declined 4% since 2009. Instead, consumers have increasingly placed their trust in the advice of experts.

Social TV also doesn’t always operate the way we expect to it. According to new research presented by Christy Tanner from TVGuide.com, the most social shows on TV aren’t necessarily those with the highest Nielsen ratings:

Although some of these shows, like NCIS and American Idol, are also extremely popular in the Nielsen ratings, most TV shows in the list buck the trend. Programs like Glee, which have huge social media followings and a great web presence, barely rank in Nielsen’s Top 40.

This means that while social TV may not be driving new viewers to the show, it’s a great measure of audience engagement. In particular, 27-33 year old women on Facebook are the most active sharers, and drive the highest conversion rates.

Unsurprisingly, Twitter beats Facebook when it comes to engagement while a show is airing. 50% of users said they tweet about the show they are watching, compared with only 35% who said they post to Facebook.

Content Curation is King

During Mashable Connect, Steve Rubel, EVP of Global Strategy and Insights for Edelman, took the stage to talk about how consumers are dealing with consumer overload.

According to Rubel, consumers use a variety of sources – not just their social networks- to discover what’s personally relevant.

So in an era of content overload, how can TV operators get attention?

It’s essential to remember that each viewer decides what to watch a little differently; while some viewers know exactly what they want, others are simply browsing for something new to watch. Rubel pointed to Richard Edelman’s “Media Cloverleaf” as a solution. The Media Cloverleaf features four distinct spheres of media which should all be utilized to engage the public on a regular basis.

In other words, multiplatform strategies that include social TV are essential. Viewers are already actively curating TV content whether operators like it or not. It looks like social TV behaviour is only set to grow- how TV operators capitalise and innovate around the trend will determine their success.

IMDB Release New Movie TV App For iPhone and iPad

IMDB the Internet Movie Database, previously released an iPad App earlier in the year. The app allows the user to view information on over 1.5 million movies. It allows you to check information about actors, actresses, directors and celebrities. Plus when your bored of reading, the app lets you to watch movie trailers.

But now IMDB have released a revamped app for both Apple’s iPhone and iPad that includes some new ‘help the movie geek’ style features.

IMDB Pro users can log-in with their pro-accounts on iPhone and iPad, plus social networking features have been introduced in the app which includes log-in with your Facebook id or share it on Twitter and Facebook.

This 2.0 release of IMDB adds some iOS 4 friendly features theres support for the Retina display in the iPhone 4 and newer iPod touches as well as multitasking capabilities. That latter feature allows you to jump between IMDB and other apps without losing your place.

Other enhancements in IMDB 2.0 don’t depend on iOS 4 support. The app now lets you sign in with either your IMDB or Facebook account to rate movies and TV shows. IMDB for the iPhone and iPad now offers entertainment news from assorted sources; a redesigned home screen brings the latest news straight to your iOS device. What’s more, the Showtimes feature has gone international with listings for movie theaters in 13 countries, including Canada and the UK. IMDB promises bug fixes and performance optimization in the 2.0 version as well.

YouView Would Welcome Sky Onboard

While Sky was originaly against the YouView platform, YouView now say they would be delighted if Sky came onboard and launched its own Sky Player VOD service on the BBC backed IPTV project.

Despite its fierce opposition to the YouView platform, Sky has been extreamly careful not to exclude the prospect to sell its content should the YouView platform become a success, which it now most likely will.

And the executives at YouView have made it very clear that they would love to have Sky involved in some way or other.

Speaking from a Broadcast Journalist event YouView chairman Kip Meek explained that, “although new partners would not be accepted until after the 2011 launch, Sky would be welcomed with open arms.”

“It would be great, fantastic, if Sky came on board,” he said. “I haven’t had talks, but YouView chief executive Richard Halton has had talks. Sky has to make their own decision like any other affiliate organisation.We would be delighted to have them on board, but not as a shareholder.”

“The situation with shareholders is that it is possible that at some point in the future we would contemplate adding to the shareholder group, but the shareholders have agreed that that is a distraction until launch has happened.”

For Sky, and many other content providers, to consider the platform, a more cohesive payment method may have to be considered – but Meek and the YouView board are already thinking about this.

“It is possible to pay for services,” said Meek. “One of the things that’s interesting to think about is do we need a common payment mechanism across the platform?”

“We haven’t developed that and at the moment that’s left to individual service providers, but you could imagine some sort of Paypal-type thing developing.”

FIFA World Cup Set To Attract Huge Ratings

The Final of the 2010 edition, held in South Africa, takes place on Sunday, and will be contested by the national football teams of Spain and Holland, and it is fair to say that the eyes of the world will certainly be fixed on this match.

The last FIFA World Cup Final, in 2006 in Germany, had an estimated worldwide television audience of over 715 million, as Italy beat France in a penalty-shootout after a 1-1 draw. This figure is more than 7 times larger than the number who watched the largest event in american football/gridiron, the Super Bowl, which had a global audience of 106 million during the 2010 edition.

Thw World Cup is also being streamed around the world with a record number of matches being streamed and being shown in the US on Both ESPN and ABC.

With television rights being sold for a total of $3.4Billion to 376 channels in 214 different countries, everything seems to be in place for the high figure of the 2006 Final to rise again, and with online broadcasters set to show more streams than ever before, it might only be possible to miss Sunday’s match if you tried to…

Watch Hulu Outside the USA on your PC

Watching free internet tv and catch up TV is great isnt it? Especially the great Hulu website showing all the greatest TV shows. However, if your a non US resident then you must be cursing every time you hear the name Hulu. Because you cannot watch it outside the US can you? Well actually, yes you can so long as you know what your doing and dont mind a little hassle to get going.

Because of copyright laws and license agreements going on around the world, the website checks your IP address and if you are anywhere other than within the US then you get the dreaded message saying your unable to view.

Watch Hulu and you can watch full TV episodes and movies from NBC, Fox, 20th Century Fox, Sony Pictures, Warner Bros, MGM, Lionsgate and more. Top shows include Battlestar Galactica, The Simpsons, Naruto, Bones, House, Arrested Development, Prison Break, Family Guy, The Office, Saturday Night Live, The Colbert Report, American Dad amongst many other TV greats.

So now that your appetite is suitably wetted, how do you watch Hulu outside the US? Well heres where we get technical and talk about proxies and Virtual Private Servers.

Watching Hulu outside the USA

Now the first option is a software product that creates a virtual private network. This fools Hulu into not realising your outside the USA. Just install and run HotSpot Shield, in your taskbar you will see a small icon. Mouse over and right click, connect to Hulu and start watching great TV.

HotSpot Shield is a little erratic and only has a miserly 8GB bandwith limit so you may only be able to watch a few shows or movies before you have to stop

Another way to watch Hulu is to download Ultrareach. The idea behind this product is to allow users of the world to enjoy the internet, especially in highly policed countries. After running it will connect you to a US proxy and therefore allow you to watch Hulu in peace

Ultrareach can affect your antivirus software and you may get many warnings from your PC but it is fine to use

Next is AlwaysVPN (which at time of posting is temporarily down). This is a free to use virtual private network that passes all of your internet useage through it in a similar way to Hotspot.

This software also makes you view advertising whilst watching

So there you have it. It is possible to watch Hulu from anywhere in the world. The solution is available, just not so simple. But until they sort out the stupid restrictions of useage its all you got.

Internet TV Explained

Online TV, Internet TV, IPTV, Catch up TV, movie streams, TV Episodes… Phew and many other names are all used to explain the process of watching TV on your PC and over the internet. So whats it all mean and how do you get it?

Well the first thing you will need to watch TV over the internet is a broadband connection, dialup just doesnt cut it so get a fast connection. The faster the better.

Internet TV, Online TV, Free TV

This refers to TV channels that have online streams. Many of these streams come from well known sites such as ABC news, QVC etc plus lots of totally unheard of channels. There is a large selection although they tend to be shopping/news/music/chat shows and not any premium content. See Internet TV Categories and countries. We also have a list of the best free internet tv websites.

To watch These Internet TV channels you will need several free media players that are available for download from the internet. Windows Media Player and Apples Quicktime are two of the most common. However, different websites use different media players, so you may need to download them all to take advantage of all the content thats available online. Download the latest media players

The difference between streaming and downloading

If your going to watch TV on your PC live or in ‘real time’ then the data has to be sent to your PC over the internet fast enough so you can watch without any hold ups. If your connection isnt up to it and cannot stream the video quick enough, the end result will be freezing screen, and patchy viewing quality whilst your computer waits for parts of the program to load up.

However already downloaded content does’nt have this problem as you download the entire video file before you start viewing. The downside with this is that the files are very large so if your broadband connection is on the slow side, you could be waiting for hours or even days!

These big files can also use up any capped broadband package allowance if you have it. You need to keep an eye on how much you are downloading as a single episode of 24, Grays anatomy or Desperate Housewives, for example, will use up several hundred megs of your data allownce.

How to download TV shows and Movies

To find and download a movie or tv episode you need to download a free p2p software package. Details of the best are on our P2P page. Then search for your movie or show and start downloading. Once its done you can access straight from your hard drive anytime even when your offline. You can also use Torrents to download which is similar to P2P but a little more complicated.

Watching Movies and TV shows

Catch up TV, On demand TV

To watch the program you want you can either go to the official networks website such as ABC or NBC etc. and search for the show. Most sites have a catch up list so just click the link to streaming TV and start watching. Visit our catch up tv section. The downside with this method is that many networks will only allow you to watch the show if your in the right country. So to watch the American networks you need to be in the USA. They can check this from your computers IP address.

Free Movie & TV show websites

By searching the many streaming TV and movie sites on the internet you can view latest movies and TV shows as soon as they are released. List of TV and Movie sites here. The downside of this method is that the legality of it is in question, although the sites are all still online and Google links to them all, however this may change at any time in the future.
