Earlier this week we reported that Time Warner are developing an iPad app allowing subscribers to watch streaming content on Apple’s new tablet. It seems that other cable companies are joining the current ipad app tv craze.

In a bid to keep disgruntled subscribers happy, they are bringing TV shows and movies to their subscribers in a number of different ways to help fight off competition from online streaming services like Netflix and Hulu Plus.

Most of the big US subscription TV providers are developing tv apps for tablet pc’s offering a choice of TV shows and movies to subscribers for free or little cost.

Comcast Corp. is in the beta testing phase of an iPad application that allows existing subscribers to search for and watch some TV shows on the go, and plans to release it by the end of the year. The company says it already has content providers lined up for the service.

HBO Co-President Eric Kessler said that the premium cable channel is planning on releasing an iPad app (known as HBO Go) allowing viewers the ability to watch a selection of up to 800 hours per month of the channel’s movies and TV shows.

Verizon have developed an application that will stream live television programming onto iPads and other portable devices such as tablet PCs and laptops. The application will apparently be offered in 2011 to the company’s FiOS customers.

Time Warner’s ipad app was revealed in a YouTube video by VP of Web Services, Jason Gaedtke. The app offers current content for subscribers to view in their area. They can see all the shows on now, or navigate through the TV listings to see what other shows are on later.

So the new battleground for online tv seems to centre around new tablet pc’s. But any success will be in conjunction with internet connected tv apps and online streaming giving customers an everywhere and anywhere tv experience.

  1. Hey Kelly, nice article. I can tell you that Comcast just released their iPad app at CES. With this app you can stream live content in your home, turning your iPad into another TV set. I don’t know if you know this but I work at DISH Network and we already offer an app for the iPad that allows you to stream live TV any where you have 3g or wifi connection.

  2. [...] iPad was always thought to be the perfect device for watching tv, sleek design and a massive battery life, portable and a big enough screen. But a new study shows [...]

  3. What are the prices for these services?
what are the channel availabitly ?
    and prices?

The idea that less is more is what the issue really is.
As a single , constantly moving professional the idea of having Cable on my laptop or ipad is EXTREMELY appealing. Traveling from city to city and not having to worry about set up of

    *internet
    *cable provider
*telephone (not mentioned in your article, but part of my essentials, which truphone or skype can take care of with the ipad)

IF this becomes acessible than I FOR ONE want in.
    Depending on

    channel availablity
    quality
    live feed
    PRICE
    and PRICE :D
