iPad Owners More Likely To Cancel Pay TV

Cable users love iPad more

Cable and Satellite tv companies live in constant fear that the trickle of cord cutters may soon turn into a torrent, and a new report will not make them feel any better, as now the iPad may contribute to those numbers.

A new study from the Diffusion Group shows that iPad owners and potential owners even, are the right demographic to say no more to monthly subscription bills. Although cable companies are pretty much dismissive of cord cutting, this may just make them sit up and take notice. Especially as cable subscribers dropped for the first time in the second quarter of 2010

The study shows that a third of people owning iPad’s are “likely” within the next 6 months to cancel their subscription TV package with 12.9% are “highly likely”. When it comes to people planning to buy an iPad, the figures change to 13.5% and 9.6% respectively.

And even those not looking to cancel, are seriously looking at going for a lower monthly subscription. 35.5% of iPad users and 29.5% of those planning to buy Apple’s device are looking to downgrade the monthly package, this compares to 20.7% of standard broadband customers.

The iPad tablet already has been a runaway success, and racked up sales of 4.19 million in just the last quartera. It has a range streaming tv and video services available, including ABC, YouTube and paid streaming from Netflix and Hulu Plus. Not forgetting tv shows and movies from the iTunes store. Cable companies are bringing out iPad apps, but there will still be the high monthly charge, so it may be too little, too late.
