The X Factor USA performed solidly for its second season on-air at Fox, and as such has naturally been given the green light to continue into next year, though it appears as though their highest-paid member of staff that isn’t Simon Cowell will not be coming back for the reality show’s season three, as X Factor insiders suggest that Britney Spears will not be given a renewal to her one-year contract.
The popstar had been paid $15m to sit at the judges’ table this year alongside Cowell, Demi Lovato, and LA Reid (who has resigned from his position to concentrate on his ‘day job’ as a record producer, and suggested that his replacement needs to be someone who ‘really loves’ music & talent), but has been written off by critics as a dull member of the panel despite the obvious attraction that her name brings.
An insider commented of the changes: “Britney will get the boot. Producers wanted her for the long haul, but it isn’t working.”
A second source added of the high salary for little of the ‘headlines’ that they wanted to generate: “They paid all that [$15m] for her to say ‘amazing’ and offer half-claps.”
A third insider summarised the likely reasoning: “[Simon Cowell] wanted crazy Britney, but he got boring Britney.”
As Britney Spears looks likely to face up to the harsh realities of ‘reality TV’ (that not being entertaining is not good enough), the singing contest is now likely to be on another long-winding search to find a celebrity replacement, but who will be hired to fill the void, another expensive but potentially ‘stable’ big name, or a lesser-known celebrity who proves themselves to have the judging ‘X Factor’?
