Blockbuster toying with its own set top movie streaming box

blockbuster Blockbuster toying with its own set top movie streaming boxDVD giant Blockbuster is planning its own set top box so it can stream movies via the internet straight to viewers TV sets. Dont hold your breathe though as a spokesman says:- ‘it’s an experiment that they don’t expect to be commercially viable for some time.’

Following in the footsteps of major rival and market leader Netflix which has embraced the concept of Internet movie streaming. Netflix already has deals set up with Roku for a settop box and dvd manufacturers for movie streaming onto Bluray players. Its latest deal being with the TiVo TV recorder currently just in the USA.

There are rumors that Blockbuster may also team up with the TiVo concept to get its movie streams onto our tv sets faster and prevent being totally left behind. Blockbuster once the biggest force in movie rentals is increasingly losing relevance in this fast moving market.

It will be very hard however to overtake Netflix’s commanding lead after it dominated the DVD rental by mail market and now leads the way in the emerging movie downloads and streams market.

Netflix whilst trailblazing the new technology has also kept its customer base happy apart from a small blip over premium charges for HD rental dvds, it has done nothing to drive customers away

However, Blockbuster who’s current use of the streaming internet movie market is installing movie download kiosks within its chain of stores using its online presence MovieLink has done little to promote the concept.

It has found itself in the position of having to move with the times and launch, a streaming device, either a BluRay solution, set top box or maybe a tie in with TiVo.
