After being available for every other platform since the dark ages, the BBC’s iPlayer catch-up TV service finally gets launched on the Windows Phone 8, well kind of.
The app which is already available for iOS, Android and BlackBerry lets mobile users catch-up with the last 7 days of BBC programming. But rather than a dedicated app, the BBC have used their mobile website which loads via the new app acting as a mere shortcut.
Options such as downloadable content enjoyed on dedicated apps such as iOS are not available on this version, and bad news if you have an older Windows Phone 7.5. The BBC has canned development for that OS, because of, “platform limitations with Windows Phone 7.5.”
Users of Windows Phone 8 have been waiting for the iPlayer app for some time, so whatever the standard of coding is, they will want to download it anyway. It is available now for free, from the Windows Phone app Store now, and includes live tile support.
