Watch iPlayer On iPad And Android As BBC Launches TV Apps

iPad and Android iPlayer apps have been released by The BBC as part of its bigger plans to see iPlayer content aggregated to a wider range of different devices. Viewers have been waiting in anticipation since the iPlayer apps were announced.

The player apps which will allow streaming of BBC TV and radio content and include many of the features from the desktop app version, these include series stacking, not forgetting access to catchup TV from the last seven days and theres also live TV and radio streaming.

Both the iPad and Android versions of the app will currently only allow streaming while connected to a Wi-Fi network rather than when connected over 3G, due to both speed and cost issues.

The iPad version does requires that iOS 4.0 or higher be installed, while the Android version is compatible with devices running Android 2.2 or newer. The BBC said in a blog post that it intends to add features to the apps throughout the year but that it would not be able to deliver it to all Android phones because of technical reasons.

“Our Flash streams need a powerful mobile phone processor and a Wi-Fi connection to ensure a smooth viewing experience, which means that only the newer and more powerful Android 2.2 devices that are connected via Wi-Fi can support the Flash 10.1 streaming experience,” Daniel Danker, the gen. manager of future media and technology for the BBC wrote.

The HTML5 based web version of the site is also available to Android and iOS devices and this will allow playback over 3G as well as a Wi-Fi connection.

In use the app is great with fast and easy touch menuing. Also a great tv listings screen that lets you watch live tv and previous BBC channel shows by scrolling back and forth along a timeline. The only downside? You have to be UK based to watch it.
