iPlayer gets even better

Not content with having the greatest catch up tv player around, the BBC are now to incorporate other channels into the service. So any searches on the BBC site for shows broadcast elsewhere will guide the viewer to a rival catch up service.

The search features along with many other improvments all come in the release of iPlayer 3.0 coming in the next few weeks. The BBC have already announced a social networking integration of iplayer with Facebook and Twitter, plus instant messaging chat from Microsoft. The BBC will also recommend shows based on your viewing habits. Viewers are also able to schedule shows for download, so a series can be saved to your pc.

Although it may seem a strange decision to link out to rivals, the BBC have commited to double the number of links to other websites. They can afford to though as the iPlayer is a much bigger success than rival catch-up TV services.

The BBC iplayer currently runs on pretty much every set-top box, console and mobile phone. We think its a great move as the sooner there is a single source for all online tv services, the sooner we can give our mice a rest.
