BBC IPlayer Goes Portable
Downloading content from the BBC’s ‘iPlayer’ feature has now become more simple than ever before, as it is now possible to download most of your favourite BBC shows directly to your computer. It is also possible to watch BBC iPlayer content in countries other than the UK now, if you know what you are doing. These developments have been made possible by the new feature of ’iPlayer Desktop’, which can be installed to any computer system after the creation of your own account.
For this account, you will need to create one that includes ‘administrator privileges’ for your system, as the installation of the BBC iPlayer Desktop is not possible without it. In addition, a system must be able to meet the required system specifications of the BBC iPlayer pages, but the website itself will be able to test for any required improvements, and offer the downloads necessary to meet this criteria.
The BBC iPlayer uses a new system developed by Adobe – AIR (Adobe Integrated Runtime), developed for the purpose of coming up with rich Internet applications such as Adobe Flex, HTML, Ajax and Adobe Flash. Adobe AIR allows HTML, Flash, JavaScript and Actionscript codes to be used in a more conventional desktop-like program. Because Adobe AIR is already packaged, installation is not an issue here.
Downloads from the BBC iPlayer for Windows would start by visiting the page where to install BBC iPlayer Desktop. The installation page will appear with simple instructions, starting by clicking the button indicating the “Install BBC Iplayer Desktop”. Adobe Air will start to install by itself. After following on-screen installation instructions, you will be questioned for confirmation on installing the application. Then, after installing, opening, and approving the conditions of the software, BBC iPlayer Desktop is ready for use. For Mac users, a similar process should apply, but following the on-screen installation instructions is the best way to go unless you are an advanced user with specific requirements.
With the new software, you will be able to download content to not only your hard drive, but also to portable storage and to mobile phones (phones that can download content directly include Apple IPhone, Nokia N96, Samsung Omnia, and BlackBerry Bold 2), after which your favourite BBC content (available for up to 7 days) is closer than ever before.

Thanks for the info regarding BBC I player. I have a MAC PC and want to load the programmes onto an external hard drive and then plug that into my TV. Will I need to download the BBC 1 player desktop to the hard drive or do I need a special media hard drive to do this?
At the moment if I click on the downloaded programmes directly on the external hard drive they will not run! They will only run if I access them through the BBC I player desktop that I have loaded onto the PC.
Does this make sense? Can you help? Thanks Paul
Hi has the problem viewing Bbc tv through AirPlay on apple Tv been fixed yet ?
