BBC iPlayer App For iPad Tablet And iPhone Gets Closer To Launch

A dedicated TV app that streams BBC iPlayer content to the iPad and iPhone is approaching a launch and will soon be available in the UK, based on reports.

The BBC have been talking about the iPlayer app for months and a web based safari version of iPlayer has been available on iPad and iPhone since launch, however the dedicated app will run more smoothly and incorporate social media options into the player.

There has been a holdup after rivals of the BBC protesting that a free BBC app could affect their commercial offerings, however it now does look as though the organization will be able to provide its programmes to Apple customers using their critically acclaimed video on demand player.

It’s thought that the app is going to be available for download in the App Store before the end of February, just before the BBC’s present technology director Erik Huggers vacates his position and heads to the halls of Intel HQ.

The iPlayer has been breaking records lately, around 4% of all of the online programme requests for the iPlayer had been made from mobile devices throughout December of 2011, which comes down to a amount close to 145 million. The app may be coming to the rest of the world soon when the BBC launch an international version of iPlayer.
