More news channel news. The Australian public broadcaster, the ABC, will launch its long-trailed 24-hour news channel, ABC News 24, on July 22nd. The new service is already being heavily trailed on the broadcaster’s existing services.

The Service will be Available only in high definition on both the Freeview digital-terrestrial platform and on pay-TV platforms Foxtel and Austar, the channel is going to be streamed live on the internet and on the ABC’s own iView catch-up TV player. Theres also an iPhone application available for free download which will also allow iPhone users to access the channel.

As well as rolling news, there is new programming specifically for ABC News 24 that will focuses on world news, national politics and business. Special programs on the arts, health and finance will also feature on the channel. Many of ABC TV’s existing news and current affairs programs, such as Lateline, Lateline Business, Stateline, Four Corners and Australian Story, will also be included as time-shifted content, extending the news offering for audiences.

The channel is due to begin broadcasting in the middle of its prime schedule time at 7.30pm, with its launch special aired simultaneously on main channel ABC1. The broadcaster will be pulling all the stops for the launch of the show, with political editor Chris Uhlmann and various foreign and regional correspondents contributing to the night.

Kate Torney, ABC News Director, said: “ABC News 24 harnesses the resources of more than a thousand ABC journalists in 60 newsrooms around the country and a dozen international bureaux, producing the quality, independent news and current affairs Australians have come to rely on from the national broadcaster.”

The Australian version of the Sky News channel has had the rolling news sector to itself, but now with competition only from BBC World News and CNN but no other domestically-focused news service. Sky News Australia is owned by BSkyB, Seven Media Group and PBL Media.
