Internet tv has taken off big time in the US with Hulu and in the UK with the BBC iPlayer leading the pack, but what about our friends down under? The Aussies are also getting into internet tv in a big way, emphasised by the Sony launch of their new Bravia range of internet connected televisions.

Apart from Sony, internet media software player Boxee are joining the party too. Well known for their internet streaming to tv software that runs on many set-top boxes and other tv connected hardware.

Sony Internet TV coming to Australia

The Sony launch of the Bravia range of televisions are impressing all who see them, giving users access to SBS and Seven’s Catch Up TV services with iView coming soon. The great thing about these catch up websites is that you now have tv on demand straight to your tv set for zero cost, and Sony are talking about a movie on demand service too.

Although the Bravia Internet Video is currently only on the new tv sets, there are plans to give users access using both the playstation 3 and  Sony Blu-ray players.

If thats not made you go weak at the knees we also have the release of the Boxee Box, which is due for  Australian release in 2010. The set-top box is designed to run Boxee media player software allowing users to access all that great online tv content straight to the tv set as well.Currently Boxee software can be used on hacked Apple TV.

Boxee can also stream other media from your pc such as photos, music as well as any movies and tv show files from your harddrive or local network, they also supply access from services such as Hulu, Joost, Netflix and Pandora. Although Hulu will not be available unless they can sort out the international streaming rights and iron out any legal issues. You will of course have access to Australian catch up tv networks

Its almost a shame that its always so sunny in Australia as many tv lovers will find it hard to tear themselves away from the tv with all this new streaming content. Mind you, mobile tv will probably be coming next so you can watch and surf.
