AT&T Caps Broadband For DSL And U-Verse Users
Just when we start getting a good streaming TV service at a good price, something has to come along and spoil the party. AT&T, one of the bigest broadband service provider in the US, has begun introducing broadband caps on their users of DSL and its U-Verse services.
According to the article on Broadband Reports, AT&T has introduced a 150 GB per month cap on DSL users while U-Verse customers have been given a 250 GB per month cap.
If a customer exceeds the download limit three times through the life of their account, the customer will be penalized with a $10 charge for every 50 GB above the cap limit. For online TV and movie watchers, that is going to hurt.
AT&T say that a justification to the broadband caps in a statement “A single high traffic user can utilize the same amount of data capacity as 19 typical households.”
“Lopsided usage patterns can cause congestion at certain points in the network, which can slow Internet speeds and interfere with other customers’ access to and use of the network,” AT&T also added.
However, there are experts who believe that AT&T’s decision to introduce broadband caps has nothing to do with online traffic management, but more to do with profits.
AT&T think that with the increase in video streaming services it may cause their customers to exceed their data limits, turning the new cap fees into a rather lucrative revenue stream for AT&T.
AT&T’s DSL business users are not affected by the cap.
