After the success of Arrested Development season 4 on Netflix, creator of the show, Mitch Hurwitz has been talking movie plans, season 5 and a top secret project for the streaming company.
It marks a massive change in fortune in fortune for a show that was dumped by Fox in 2006, and was off our screens for seven long years before being rebooted by Netflix for season 4.
Hurwitz was speaking to Rolling Stone and said that the movie is being worked on right now and there are just a few logistical problems to sort out.
He said, “I can’t get into much more detail because I don’t want to scare anybody off. I don’t want to be presumptuous about it. I don’t own the property outright – it’s a 20th Century Fox property. But everybody seems really into it and really eager to make a movie.”
Getting the whole cast into one place is a problem that existed for season 4, and was overcome by making each episode character-centric. It looks like similar issues will hinder a movie and new season as well.
Being the busy man he is, Hurwitz also intends to make a fifth season after the movie is done so long as commitments allow. Hurwitz said, “A TV season is a six-month commitment,” he says. “But I think it would be very doable to get them together for four or five weeks to make a movie.”
He is also in the midst of another project for Netflix, saying that he was also, “trying to do something else for Netflix.” But any further details on this from the man himself or the streaming company are not forthcoming just yet.
