The UK based catch-up-TV service, Youview have lost their high profile apprentice chairman, Lord Sugar who has quit the company after nearly 2 years in the hotseat.
The host of Apprentice UK (playing the same role as Donald Trump in the US version) will be departing in, “the next few weeks” after being hired with the brief to get the Youview set-top box launched.
The set-top-box which can be purchased for £299 retail, launched last summer and is backed by a collection of big media companies including ITV, BT, Channel 4, and the BBC. The service lets consumers watch both live, recorded and streamed content from the last 7 days on free digital TV channels using an innovative EPG (electronic program guide).
There are unsubstantiated rumours that the Apprentice host used the same no-nonsense approach in the Youview boardroom, which is said to have caused tension amongst other shareholders in the venture.
Speaking about his departure, Lord Sugar said, “When I joined YouView in 2011, my brief from the shareholders was to use my experience in the electronics industry to get the product to market and into the homes of consumers. Having done that successfully, my job is complete and I will now focus my time and attention into my other businesses.“
Youview which was revolutionary when announced under the name of Project Kangaroo, suffered a number of delays, which caused the service to launch 2 years later than expected. By this time there were other competing services which offered a similar service. Although YouView claim it is, ”now the fastest-growing TV platform in the UK.”
For some people it may seem a shame that Lord Sugar wasn’t despatched another way, hearing the famous words, “Your Fired,” that he so frequently says with gusto on his TV show. YouView say that a replacement for Alan Sugar will be announced, “in due course.”
