The Next Apple TV Will Become More Like iPad

new apple tv The Next Apple TV Will Become More Like iPadThere are rumors flying around that Apples next update to their Apple TV product and make it run more like an iPad. They plan to remove the hard drive and use the iOS that currently runs on iphone and iPad, as the new operating system.

If the reports are correct, the new Apple TV would be able to stream music and movies from the Internet as well as run the majority of the apps currently available in the App Store.

Soon after the launch of Apple TV, Steve Jobs said the company’s TV efforts as a “hobby.”  He has mentioned this position several times since then stating, ”I think the whole category is still a hobby now—nobody has succeeded at it.”

During this year’s All Things Digital Conference, Jobs was asked when Apple would do something to reinvent television. The TV market, according to Jobs is “Balkanized” with no single technology standard, unlike GSM for wireless networks, and no national cable company with the reach to cover an entire country, unlike AT&T for the iPad and iPhone.

We fully expect that Apple will introduce a new Apple TV device which will stream content over the internet and run on a new version of iOS. However, a new Apple TV will still face the same issues Steve Jobs previously referred to.

Also the ability of a new Apple TV to run the current iPhone and iPad apps is hard to grasp due to the touch interface required to operate all current iOS apps. Unless Apple were to marry the Apple TV to an iPod Touch like device, the user would find it difficult interacting with apps using a standard remote control.

An iPod Touch combination wouldn’t be totally out of the question, as Apple already provides an iTunes app to remotely control content selection and playback. Such a combination would also likely be expensive and could be awkward to operate while watching the TV.

Based on the issues facing the TV market, we are not holding our breath for an Apple TV that’s as revolutionary as the iPad or iPhone were. However, Apple has been known to make some magic happen so we cant rule anything out at the moment.
