Annoying Orange Granted Cartoon Network Series
While they did not manage to get the colour match-up that a deal with Nickelodeon would have brought, the creators and producers of popular online series The Annoying Orange have succeeded in their attempts to bring the show to TV screens, following an arrangement signed with one of Nickelodeon’s rival stations, Cartoon Network.
Series developers The Collective claim that with 850 million YouTube channel views, it is the most-watched regular online series of all time, having began in 2009 as a web series created by Dane Boedigheimer alongside a producer with animation experience, Tom Sheppard (Pinky & the Brain).
The executive production team for the Cartoon Network version of the show will include Conrad Vernon (who is also working on upcoming movie Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted), and Gary Binkow and Dan Weinstein, who both represent The Collective.
Set to be released next year, the show will take the form of a spin-off, with the characters (‘Orange’ and his friends) departing from their usual kitchen-based storylines to travel through time with a ‘magic fruit cart’, having adventures in a number of eras during a series of half-hour episodes. Further details of the first series, such as the number of episodes ordered by Cartoon Network, are currently unconfirmed.
Boedigheimer said of The Annoying Orange‘s rise to fame: “Two years ago when I launched The Annoying Orange, I never imagined that my unhealthy obsession with talking fruit would become such a phenomenon.”
Cartoon Network claim that they want to work alongside with The Collective to ‘mobilise and motivate’ the brand’s property, including the YouTube channel, official website, and merchandise, but will this TV spin-off have an even greater number of passers-by reaching for the earmuffs?
