Annoying Orange Gets TV Series

It’s annoying and it’s orange. If you dont know what i’m talking about then you’re one of the lucky ones. Production company The Collective look set to bring the Internet viral phenomenom to our TV screens, as they plan to pitch an animated TV series of The Annoying Orange.

To do this, they have collaborated with Dane Boedigheimer, creator of the popular series, which is animated by inserting pre-filmed human facial features onto the kitchen-based characters, giving off a slightly creepy outlook.

The Annoying Orange, in what will be its new animated TV comedy format, have already set about hiring staff for production, with the executive production team currently consisting of Conrad Vernon (co-director of Monsters and Aliens & Shrek 2) as lead producer, Tom Sheppard (Pinky and the Brain) as writer, while on the casting side of the show, Malcom McDowell is serving as an unspecified voice actor, with other roles on the cast are yet to be decided.

The Collective seems to have faith in the project, announcing their intention to fund the production of six half-hour-long episodes of the show, although there has not yet been a deal arranged with a network for broadcasting the first series, but it is likely that a children’s network will soon pick up the project, given the series’ popularity with its target market.

The Annoying Orange series on YouTube has gone from strength to strength since its debut in 2009 on YouTube, having claimed over 500 million views on the video sharing site (and the 8th-highest subscribed channel of all time), with the novelty of a talking orange heckling his friends, usually the other fruits, vegetables, and snacks in the room, who all fear the dreaded ‘knife’. As well as this mainstream success, the series also has 7 million fans on Facebook fans, a Top 10 official ’app’ on the iTunes store, and the recent release of an official game for Apple iOS systems (Annoying Orange: Kitchen Carnage).

The Collective, who represent two of the key figures in the project Boedigheimer and Sheppard, are looking to repeat the success of similar series Fred(starring Lucas Cruikshank), by developing the show independently on YouTube, then taking the format to Nickelodeon (who produced an official TV movie (which has a very poorly received reception by critics, and on film website IMDB, although a sequel is still in the works)). Will The Annoying Orange inspire similar ‘success’ on TV?
