Nearly Half Americans Use Netflix Monthly
Netflix may have some problems but there is no denying it is a popular concept, and new research shows that nearly half of US consumers watch the streaming service at least monthly.
The research by Knowledge Networks called ‘How People Use Over-the-Top TV’, looked at US consumers aged in the age range of 13-54 who said they watched Netflix streaming or rented DVD’s from the service, of course many do both.
The survey showed that Netflix subscribers watch around four movies and five TV shows every week. 35% of consumers say they use the service at least monthly. Game consoles were the most popular device used for streaming, 62% used consoles to watch while other connected hardware such as set-top boxes, Blu-ray players and media players accounted for 15%.
Facts from the survey included:-
- 35% of all US consumers aged 13-54 use Netflix streaming and/or DVD or Blu-ray rentals every month
- The average user watches 5 TV shows and 4 movies per week using streaming or DVD-rental aspects of the service;
- 20% of Netflix users with VOD are watching VOD less because of their Netflix viewing; but
- 10% of Netflix subscribers said they were “very likely” to cancel the service if their cable or satellite provider began to offer a similar service at a similar price.
Speaking about the survey, David Tice of Knowledge Networks said, “Netflix has made remarkable in-roads, bringing streaming video and other alternative viewing options to a mass audience.”
Their dominance in the market is sitting on pretty thin ice though, as 10 % of respondents would happily swith to their local cable or satellite provider if they offered a similar service for the same price.
Tice continued, “At present, Netflix has a dominant market position in this space—but cable video on demand (VOD) and other video services are widely available and poised to act as alternatives. Netflix needs to use its remarkable platform to build deeper customer relationships, differentiating itself by offering benefits that speak to subscribers’ desire for control, comfort, and convenience.”
The survey was carried out before the Netflix recent price rise and seperation of streaming and DVD services, so there may be many more consumers looking to jump ship.

Which is it, Netflix or Hulu the half of Americans watch? There seems to be a conflict between your headline and your first paragraph.
Hey Elwood thanks for pointing that out. Put it down to blog fatigue…
That’s an interesting survey. It does bring up some questions though. When was the survey taken? Was it after Netflix started making changes to their service, their prices and their names? Since then other services have been announced. Amazon and Wal-mart are jumping into streaming services now. The last statistic, about people willing to switch if their provider offered something similar, brings me to my favorite new option. My TV provider/employer DISH Network now offers the Blockbuster Movie Pass for just $10 per month. That includes streaming to my TV or computer. Also included are thousands of DVD movies and TV shows, Blu-rays and video games too. There are no due dates or late fees and the service is nicely incorporated with my DISH Network account. All the billing, streaming and queue management can be done with my DISHNetwork.com login. I think it’s the best of all the Netflix alternatives!
