When it comes to tablet PC’s, nobody seems to have a cat in hells chance of moving Apple out of their dominate position with iPad, except maybe Amazon. We have known for some time that Amazon plan on launching two new tablets designed for streaming video-on demand as well as reading ebooks (a’la kindle) and shopping online. But now that more details are emerging, it looks like Amazon may be the only tablet supplier capable of taking on Apple.

The guys from TechCrunch have managed to get a hands on look at the new Amazon Kindle Tablet, and although based on Android (which has’nt exactly set the world on fire) has enough must have features to make it a serious option for new buyers. For starters the Amazon tablet has a completely new user interface that brings the complete Amazon ecosystem to the tablet.

So the hardware will consist of a dumbed down 7-inch touchscreen (against iPad 9.7 inch), two finger multi-touch (against the iPad’s 10 finger support), no camera (but then who needs one?), single-core processor and 6 GB of storage. It seems that Amazon will make heavy use of the cloud to store and play media though and it will have an attractive pricepoint of around $249.

The news gets more exciting though, when you hear that buyers may get a free subscription to the Amazon Prime service (normal cost $79 yearly), and even a free 3G internet connection. So straight out of the box the Amazon tablets lets the user download and read books, listen to music via Amazon’s Cloud Player and watch video-on-demand and movies whilst shopping via the Amazon storefront.

The new Kindle Tablet is expected to hit the stores in November , and whilst the hardware will not excite anyone, the added free options and pricepoint will certainly get punters excited.
