Amazon Schedule Tablet Reveal In Big Apple
After recent market analysis of tablet computers suggested a prolonged dominance for Apple’s iPad system, it appears that the researchers may want to rethink their calculations a little, as online shopping giant Amazon’s planned tablet device is rumored to be announced tomorrow.
The company (who are based in Seattle, USA) have called a press conference in New York City for tomorrow, and while they have not revealed what it is for, much of the media involved are certain that it will be on the new tablet device, following months of speculation that one was in the works.
Technology blog TechCrunch reports that the new device which is follow-up to their well-received virtual book reader ‘Kindle’, will be developed by Amazon and powered by Google Android.
Known as the ’Kindle Fire’, it will carry a seven-inch (17.78cm) screen, making it smaller in physical size than the 9.7-inch (24.6cm) iPad, with an expected release date set to be for the second week in November.
Market analysts are now claiming that the potential Kindle Fire tablet could leapfrog its way to the position of number two tablet fast, suggesting that Amazon are the company most capable of challenging Apple’s much-publicised dominance.
Freelance technology analyst Carmi Levy explained the predictions: “More than any other recent tablet introduction, Amazon’s entry is set to shake the still-solidifying market to its very core. Unlike hardware manufacturers who lack the pockets and the resolve to slug it out with Apple in a protracted war over market share, Amazon has both the resources and the will to stay in the game as long as it needs to.”
Forrester Research’s Sarah Rotman Epps, who compared Amazon’s plans to take on Apple as a ’David taking on Goliath’ scenario, does stand a chance through its resolve, citing Amazon’s “willingness to sell hardware at a loss combined with the strength of its brand, content, cloud infrastructure, and commerce assets makes it the only credible iPad competitor in the market.”
They may well have big plans up their sleeve, but will the Kindle Fire cause a storm in the tablet computer market, or are they going to be content as one of the ‘best of the rest’?
