Amazon Launch Free Streaming Service For Prime Members

Amazon have now launched their streaming movie and tv show service for $79 per year members of the Amazon Prime program. However it is seen by some as a precursor to taking on Netflix and Hulu Plus in the subscription online tv market.

Amazon going after Netflix?

So whats the catch? Nothing comes free after all. Well apart from a smaller selection than you might want (around 1700 movies and 484 TV seasons), it seems to be a great feature to offer to Prime members.

If your not already a Prime member then this may make you want to become one, that is if you shop on Amazon regulalry. The benefit of becoming a member is that you get free 2 day shipping on any goods purchased. Not really enough to make me want to join. But then add in the following benefit – Unlimited, ad free streaming of around 5000 movies and TV shows at no extra cost and i might be sold on the idea.

The streaming service uses the same technology as the current Amazon VOD service and will work on any hardware that supports the service and is connected to the web and comes in HD as well.

The selection seems pretty good, but older titles including Hairspray, Analyze This and Contact. Plus there are many full seasons of top TV shows. The new streaming service will be ready to use in the 200 plus connected devices that stream Amazon (Connected TVs, Blu-ray, Set-top boxes etc.)

The interesting part is that this is the first Time Amazon have, in effect offered streaming tv on a subscription basis. Currently the streaming works more like iTunes in that you pay for a single movie or show.Next up, may be an assault on the Netflix market that is so successful and the service will definately be a thorn in the Hulu Plus ($7.99 oer month) service.

The move is a win/win situation for Amazon Instant Video, more Prime signups and a first taste off the subscription streaming tv market. One thing is certain, if Amazon want to be a big player they are well equipped to take over the market.
